Chapter 5 - The Legal Storm

Two days passed in a blur of sterile hospital rooms, heavy police reports, and mounting tension.

While Willa fought for her life in the PICU, battling the raging infection brought on by her rain-soaked escape, a different kind of war was brewing in the courtrooms of the city precinct.

Elise sat in the office of Assistant District Attorney Eleanor Vance, a sharp-eyed woman with silvering hair who had spent twenty years prosecuting domestic violence cases. Marcus sat beside Elise, his presence a steady anchor as the legal machinery hummed into motion.

“Richard Byrne’s defense attorney is already filing motions,” ADA Vance said, tossing a thick legal folder onto her wooden desk. “They are claiming Richard suffered a severe psychotic break brought on by the stress of his daughter’s terminal illness.”

Elise felt a surge of indignation hot in her chest. “A psychotic break? He deliberately stalked his wife, waited until she was isolated, abducted his six-year-old son, and threatened to murder him if Sarah didn't recant her domestic abuse testimony!”

“I know,” Vance said calmly, raising a hand to soothe Elise. “And I agree with you completely, Mrs. Hart. But Richard Byrne’s defense team is slick. They are trying to painter Sarah as an unstable, vindictive mother who lied about previous abuse to secure sole custody and isolate a grieving father from his sick child.”

“That’s sick,” Marcus growled, his jaw tight. “I saw that man’s eyes at the warehouse. He was calculated. He had a crowbar, he had a knife, and he took that boy to an abandoned site he knew inside and out.”

“Which is why your testimony, Elise, is going to be the linchpin of this entire case,” Vance said, leaning forward and locking eyes with Elise. “You are an independent, unbiased third-party witness. You aren't part of their family drama. You are a former family advocacy volunteer, a heavily pregnant mother who happened to see a child fleeing in the rain.”

“I’ll testify,” Elise said without a moment’s hesitation. “I’ll say whatever needs to be said to keep that monster away from those children forever.”

“It won't be easy,” Vance warned gently. “The defense will try to discredit you. They will claim you put a child’s life at risk by taking Willa to the warehouse instead of immediately returning her to the hospital. They will try to make you look like an reckless vigilante.”

Elise squared her shoulders. “Let them try.”

Later that afternoon, Elise returned to St. Catherine’s Hospital. Sarah was sitting in the family lounge outside the PICU, staring blankly at a paper cup of cold coffee.

Elise sat down beside her, offering a warm smile. “How is she doing today?”

Sarah looked up, her tired face brightening slightly. “The doctors say the antibiotics are finally winning. Her fever broke two hours ago. They took her off the high-flow oxygen.”

Elise let out a long breath of relief. “Thank God.”

“Elise...” Sarah turned to her, her eyes filling with fresh tears. “The police told me Richard’s lawyer is trying to claim I made up the abuse. They’re saying... they’re saying I’m the reason all of this happened.”

Elise reached out, gripping Sarah’s hand tightly. “Listen to me, Sarah. You did nothing wrong. You took the hardest, bravest step a mother can take when you walked away from him to protect your children. He is using fear because he knows he’s losing control.”

“I’m scared,” Sarah whispered, her voice cracking. “If he gets out on bail... if his lawyer convinces a judge that he’s just a broken father...”

“He won't get out,” Elise declared fiercely. “I promise you, Sarah. Marcus and I are not going anywhere. We are going to stand with you in that courtroom, and we are going to make sure the world sees Richard Byrne for exactly what he is.”

Just then, the double doors of the PICU swung open, and a pediatric nurse stepped out, looking around the lounge.

“Mrs. Byrne?” the nurse called out with a warm smile. “Willa is awake, and she’s asking if she can have a visitor.”
