Chapter 3 - The Hospital Room Ambush

By 7:00 AM, the rain had stopped, leaving Manhattan bathed in a cold, slate-grey morning light.

I walked into the private surgical recovery wing of St. Jude’s Hospital, flanked by Arthur Sterling and two armed private security detail officers.

The surgical procedure to separate Julian and Clarissa had been completed two hours earlier. The medical staff had kept the matter extraordinarily quiet, bribed by Julian’s legal team, but Arthur had already used his influence with the hospital’s board of trustees to secure full access to the floor.

Clarissa had already been discharged, smuggled out through the basement parking garage by her frantic parents, leaving behind a trail of ruined marriage vows and impending lawsuits.

Julian lay in his hospital bed, his face pale, an IV line hooked into his arm. His right wrist was handcuffed to the heavy steel bed frame—a courtesy of the Greenwich Police Department following Beatrice’s arrest four hours ago.

When the door opened and I walked in, Julian flinched, pulling the white sheet up to his chest.

"Rebecca..." he rasped, his throat dry from the anesthesia. "What... what did you do to Beatrice?"

I pulled a leather chair to the side of his bed, sat down, and crossed my legs. Arthur Sterling stood near the door, holding a thick stack of legal documents.

"Beatrice is currently held without bail at the Westchester County Detention Center," I said smoothly. "Her legal team tried to post bond, but the District Attorney added wire fraud and medical tampering to the charge sheet."

Julian’s eyes darted toward Arthur, then back to me, pure terror glistening in his dark eyes. "You... you opened the safe."

"I opened the safe, Julian," I confirmed. "I read the second ledger. I read the agreements with Dr. Harrison Cole. And I found my grandfather’s gold signet ring."

Julian closed his eyes, a deep, shuddering breath escaping his lips. "Rebecca... listen to me. Please. You don't understand what was happening back then. I didn't want to hurt your mother!"

"You kept her sedated for two years, Julian," I said, my voice dead calm. "You hired a crooked doctor to write prescriptions for heavy neuroleptics, keeping her too confused to manage her financial affairs, while you and Beatrice transferred her voting shares into your offshore shell company in Panama."

"It wasn't my idea!" Julian whimpered, his arrogant facade completely destroyed. "It was Beatrice! She threatened to expose my past! She knew about my first company in Chicago—the one that went bankrupt after I altered the audit reports! She told me if I didn't help her neutralize your mother, she would destroy me!"

"So you decided to neutralize my mother, and then marry me to seal the deal," I said, leaning forward, resting my elbows on my knees. "Did you ever love me, Julian? Even for a single day?"

Julian looked at me, his lip trembling. For a second, I thought he might attempt another lie, another grand declaration of romantic regret. But looking into my cold, unyielding eyes, he realized the performance was over.

"Love doesn't pay for five-million-dollar brownstones, Rebecca," he said, his voice dropping into a bitter, venomous whisper. "Your grandfather built an empire, and he left it all to two weak, emotional women who didn't even know how to deploy capital. You were sitting on a fortune you didn't deserve. I simply took what belonged to someone who actually knew how to use it."

Arthur Sterling stepped forward, placing a thick blue folder on Julian’s bed tray.

"This is the formal petition for immediate corporate dissolution of your holdings," Arthur announced coldly. "Along with a complete surrender of all marital assets, voting proxy rights, and personal accounts tied to Vance & Sterling Enterprises. If you sign this now, Miss Sterling will instruct her legal team not to seek the maximum penalty on the grand larceny charges."

Julian laughed—a dry, hacking sound. "And if I don't sign? I still hold twenty-two percent of the voting shares in my name, Arthur. You can't fire me from the board without a two-thirds majority, and Beatrice’s allies still hold fifteen percent!"

"Beatrice’s allies sold their shares two hours ago, Julian," I said, pulling my phone from my clutch and sliding it across his blanket.

On the screen was the real-time financial ticker for the New York Stock Exchange.

VANCE & STERLING ENTERPRISES (VSE): 51% ACQUIRED BY STERLING TRUST HOLDINGS.

Julian stared at the screen, his mouth open, his eyes bulging. "How... how did you buy fifty-one percent?! Where did you get the capital?!"

"From the USB drive in your safe, Julian," I replied smoothly. "My grandfather didn't just leave me a ring. He left the key to a private contingency fund stored in a Swiss trust—a fund specifically designed to buy back controlling interest in the company if a hostile takeover ever occurred. You had the drive in your safe for five years, but you couldn't access it because you didn't have my grandfather’s biometric signet ring."

Julian looked down at his cuffed wrist, then at the phone, realizing that every single step he had taken for eight years had been calculated, anticipated, and finally turned against him.

"You're going to prison, Julian," I said, standing up and smoothing my skirt. "And when you get out in fifteen years, you won't even have enough money to buy the suit you're wearing."

I turned my back on him and walked toward the door.

"Rebecca!" Julian screamed behind me, his voice echoing down the hospital corridor. "Rebecca, wait! There’s something else! You don't know about Marcus! Marcus was in on it too! He knew about Clarissa! He knew about the shares!"

May you like

I stopped near the doorway, but I didn't turn around.

"Marcus already called me an hour ago, Julian," I said softly. "And unlike you, he gave me everything I needed without asking for a deal."
