Chapter 9 - Shadows Left Behind

Two years later.

The news of Hayes Global Enterprises’ stellar performance under its new, ethical management structure made headlines across the financial world. The company’s stock reached an all-time high, driven entirely by its new focus on green technology and medical infrastructure investments.

I still retained controlling ownership, but my daily life remained centered entirely on my family.

On a warm summer evening, I sat on the back porch of our estate in Chestnut Hill, watching the sunset over the hills.

Lily—now eleven years old—was sitting at an easel on the lawn, painting a watercolor portrait of the glowing orange sky. She had grown tall, healthy, and confident, her laughter a constant, beautiful melody throughout the house.

My phone chimed on the table beside my coffee cup.

It was an official email notification from the Massachusetts Department of Corrections.

I opened the message.

It was an automated legal notice informing victims of Victoria Hale’s status:

Notice of Offender Status: Inmate #88492 (Victoria Hale) has exhausted all state and federal appeals. Parole eligibility remains permanently denied until the year 2068.

I stared at the screen for a moment.

Two years ago, a message like that would have triggered a surge of dark, burning anger in my chest. I would have remembered the sight of her standing on Lily’s bed, twisting the IV tube, whispering her vile, toxic threats in the dark.

Now?

I felt nothing.

No anger. No hatred. No revenge.

Victoria Hale and her father were nothing more than faint, powerless ghosts locked away in concrete graves, completely erased from the bright, beautiful world we had built.

I closed the email, deleted the notification, and set the phone face-down on the table.

"Daddy!" Lily called out from the lawn, waving her paintbrush in the air. "Come look! I finished it!"

May you like

I stood up from my chair, a warm, genuine smile spreading across my face.

"Coming, sweetheart!"
