Chapter 8 - The Birth of Grace

At 5:48 a.m., inside the state-of-the-art delivery suite at St. David’s Medical Center in Austin, the storm outside gave way to a soft, golden sunrise painting the clouds in shades of pink and gold.

The room was quiet, save for the rhythmic beeping of the heart monitor and the steady, soothing sound of medical equipment.

With one final, triumphant push, a sharp, clear, glorious cry filled the room.

“It’s a girl!” the doctor announced with a joyful smile, lifting the beautiful, perfect newborn baby into the warm light. “A healthy, strong seven-pound baby girl!”

Tears spilled freely down my cheeks as the nurse gently placed my daughter onto my chest.

She had a head of soft dark hair, tiny delicate fingers that immediately curled around my thumb, and bright, curious dark eyes that looked up at me with absolute innocence.

All the pain, all the terror, all the dark, deceitful games played by the monsters who had tried to steal her future vanished into absolute insignificance the moment I felt her breathing against my heart.

“Hi, Grace,” I whispered, kissing her soft, warm forehead. “Welcome to the world, Grace Mercer.”

The door to the delivery room opened softly.

Marcus Vance walked in, wearing a scrub top over his dress shirt, carrying a huge bouquet of white roses. He stopped near the bed, looking at me and baby Grace with deep, gentle pride.

“She’s perfect, Victoria,” Marcus said softly, his voice thick with emotion.

“She’s safe,” I corrected, smiling through my tears. “That’s all that matters.”

“Richard Mercer is currently under 24-hour police guard at University Hospital with a broken femur and two fractured ribs,” Marcus reported quietly, sitting in the chair beside my bed. “The federal prosecutors have formally charged him with RICO conspiracy, attempted murder, wire fraud, and corporate espionage. He won't be getting bail.”

“And Eleanor?” I asked.

“Her defense completely collapsed after Richard’s arrest,” Marcus revealed. “She signed a full confession this morning. She’s taking a plea deal: fifteen years in state prison without parole. Julian’s ten-year federal plea has been officially accepted by the judge.”

I looked down at Grace, who was sleeping peacefully against my chest, unbothered by the darkness of the world she had been born into.

“What about Chloe?” I asked softly.

Marcus smiled genuinely. “Chloe spent the last four hours at the station giving a full deposition that sealed the case against Richard. She turned down her share of the family trust inheritance, Victoria. She told the DA she wants to earn her own way.”

I took a deep breath, feeling a profound, clean sense of closure settle over my soul.

“Tell Chloe she has a job waiting for her at Vance Development,” I said. “As an junior associate in our corporate ethics division.”
