Chapter 7 - The Final Horizon

Two months later, the sun was setting over a quiet, secluded lake in the Blue Ridge Mountains, painting the sky in brilliant shades of amber, violet, and gold.

I stood on the wraparound wooden porch of our new home—a modest, beautiful log cabin surrounded by towering pines and miles of pristine wilderness. There were no security cameras needed here, no high brick walls, no toxic neighbors, and no golden cages.

Just peace.

From inside the cabin, the sound of laughter drifted out through the open screen door.

"Daddy! Look! I made a double-decker pancake stack!"

Emma came running out onto the porch, wearing her favorite unicorn pajamas, holding a paper plate loaded with syrup-soaked pancakes that were leaning at a dangerously unstable angle.

I laughed, kneeling down to catch the plate before it tipped over.

"That is an architectural masterpiece, Captain," I said, kissing the top of her head as she giggled and wrapped her small arms tightly around my neck.

"Are we staying here forever, Daddy?" she asked softly, looking up at me with her big, bright eyes.

"Forever," I whispered, holding her close against my chest, feeling the steady, healthy beat of her heart. "Nobody is ever going to hurt you again, sweetheart. I promise."

Across the yard, Jordan Blake walked up the wooden steps carrying a box of books for the living room shelves, pausing to smile at us before heading inside.

I looked out past the porch, watching the last rays of sunlight dip below the mountain ridge.

The nightmare was over. The storm had passed. And as I held my daughter tightly in my arms, I knew that no matter what shadows tried to creep in from the world outside, I would always be there to stand in the light.
