Chapter 5 - The Awakening

While state and federal agents surrounded the house in Fishers Point, Room 412 at St. Agnes Hospital was bathed in the soft, blue light of late afternoon.

Margaret lay still, the heavy warming blankets replaced by a crisp white sheet and a thermal fleece blanket. The blue tint had finally left her lips, though her face remained pale and drawn.

Beside her bed, Eleanor sat in an armchair, typing furiously on her laptop, her reading glasses perched on the tip of her nose.

A soft groan echoed from the bed.

Eleanor immediately set her laptop aside, standing up and taking Margaret’s hand. "Maggie? Maggie, can you hear me?"

Margaret’s eyelids fluttered, then slowly opened. Her vision was blurry at first, taking in the IV lines, the heart monitor, and the familiar, comforting face of her sister.

"Eleanor..." Margaret’s voice was dry, sounding like sandpaper.

"Don't try to speak too much, sweetie," Eleanor said gently, pouring a cup of water and holding the straw to Margaret’s lips. "Drink a little bit."

Margaret took a small sip, the cool liquid soothing her parched throat. Memories of the night came rushing back in a terrifying wave—the freezing wind, the snow biting her bare feet, David’s cold eyes behind the frosted glass, Ryan’s cruel smile.

Tears welled up in Margaret’s eyes, spilling over her temples into her hair.

"He... he didn't believe me," Margaret whispered, her heart monitor giving a series of rapid, distressed beeps. "He locked me out, Eleanor. He threw my things in the snow..."

"Shh, keep calm, Maggie. Your heart is still very fragile," Eleanor urged, stroking Margaret’s forehead. "Listen to me. David knows everything now."

Margaret turned her head slightly, her brows furrowing. "What?"

"I gave him a piece of my mind at the hospital last night," Eleanor said, her tone hardening. "And Ryan showed his true colors. The police arrested Ryan this morning, Maggie. He crashed David’s car while trying to flee state lines with drugs and stolen cards. He’s going to prison for a very long time."

Margaret closed her eyes, letting out a long, shuddering breath. She didn't feel joy. She didn't feel vindication. She only felt a vast, hollow emptiness.

"Where is David?" Margaret asked quietly.

Eleanor’s jaw tightened. "He’s been sitting in the waiting room downstairs for six hours. The hospital staff won't let him up because I put a legal protection hold on your room. He tried to get in twice, but security turned him away."

Margaret remained silent for a long moment, watching the snow fall outside the window.

"He called me a liar," Margaret said softly. "I stood on that porch and begged him for my coat. I begged him to let me explain. He looked right at me... and clicked the lock."

"I know, baby. I know," Eleanor said gently.

"Tell security to let him in," Margaret said.

Eleanor stared at her sister in shock. "Maggie, no! You aren't strong enough for this! The doctor said your stress levels need to stay down—"

"I need to look him in the eye, Eleanor," Margaret said, her voice suddenly taking on a quiet, unbreakable strength that surprised even her sister. "I need him to see what he did. Please."

Eleanor looked into Margaret’s eyes for several seconds, realizing that her gentle, soft-spoken sister had shifted into someone entirely different. The woman who had survived cancer was no longer willing to be a victim.

"Okay," Eleanor said, nodding slowly. "I’ll go get him."
