CHAPTER 2: THE LAWYER WHO KNEW TOO MUCH

The next morning, I left the house before Richard woke up.

Not because I was afraid.

Because I was finally curious.

The lawyer’s office was downtown.

Glass walls.

Clean furniture.

The kind of place where people pretend emotions don’t exist.

He was waiting for me.

Not surprised.

As if he already expected I would come.

“Mrs. Collins,” he said, standing. “Please sit.”

I didn’t.

“Tell me everything,” I said.

He nodded once.

Then opened a thick file.

MICHAEL’S SECOND LIFE

“Your husband was not only a private investor,” the lawyer began.

“He was also a silent partner in three asset protection firms.”

I frowned.

“I don’t understand.”

He turned the page.

“Meaning he helped structure legal shields for vulnerable individuals—especially spouses in coercive marriages.”

My breath slowed.

“That’s… not something he told me.”

The lawyer nodded.

“He didn’t want you to know while he was alive.”

A pause.

“But he wanted you to discover it only if necessary.”

My hands tightened.

“Necessary for what?”

He looked at me carefully.

“To prove whether someone would try to control you after his death.”

THE CONDITION REVEALED

He slid a single page across the desk.

At the top, bold text:

TRUST ACTIVATION CONDITION: VERIFIED FINANCIAL COERCION EVENT

I stared at it.

“So Richard has to be proven abusive for me to access it?” I asked.

The lawyer corrected gently:

“Not abusive.”

A pause.

“Exploitive.”

Silence.

He continued.

“The moment documentation confirms asset restriction, manipulation, or unauthorized transfers…”

He tapped the page.

“…the entire estate unlocks automatically.”

My voice dropped.

“And who confirms it?”

The lawyer looked at me.

“You already did.”

THE TRAP I DIDN’T KNOW I WAS BUILDING

I sat down slowly.

Because I suddenly understood something terrifying.

Every document I had signed while recovering.

Every conversation I had ignored.

Every account I thought was “shared.”

It wasn’t just evidence of what Richard did.

It was evidence of what Michael predicted.

The lawyer closed the file.

“There is one more thing,” he said.

I looked up.

He hesitated.

“Your husband did not only leave instructions.”

A pause.

“He left surveillance clauses.”

My stomach dropped.

“What kind of surveillance?”

The lawyer’s expression tightened slightly.

“Legal observation through financial activity triggers.”

I whispered:

“So someone is watching everything?”

He nodded.

“And reporting it in real time.”

END OF CHAPTER 2

My phone buzzed.

Unknown number.

One message:

“He just tried to freeze another account.”

I didn’t need to ask who “he” was.

Because for the first time…

May you like

I realized Richard wasn’t trying to take my life.

He was trying to finish it before it activated.
