Chapter 9 - Mercer & Brooks

Four months later, the sun was shining brightly over 5th Street.

The new building was magnificent. High ceilings, polished concrete floors, state-of-the-art digital printing presses humming smoothly, and a warm, sunlit lobby with floor-to-ceiling windows.

Mounted above the front glass doors was a beautifully carved oak sign with bold gold lettering:

MERCER & BROOKS PRINTING & COMMUNITY MEDIA

Calvin was no longer just an apartment maintenance worker. He was my official business partner and head of facility operations. His brilliant engineering mind had helped design a custom, energy-efficient layout for the high-speed digital presses that cut our overhead costs in half.

Inside the front lobby, a framed photograph hung prominently on the wall.

It wasn't a picture of the new shop.

It was a framed photo of three wrinkled dollar bills—the exact three dollars Calvin had placed on the table at Lydia’s Diner five months ago.

Underneath the frame, a brass plaque read:

"Dignity is not given. It is shared."

At 4:00 PM, the front door chimed.

Maya walked in, wearing her school uniform, her backpack bouncing on her shoulders. She was nine now, taller, her cheeks rosy, her eyes bright and completely free of the dark worry that had once haunted her.

"Hey, Boss!" Maya called out, tossing her backpack onto the lobby couch. "I got a 100% on my history report!"

"That's Assistant Manager Maya to you," I laughed, coming out from behind the counter to give her a high-five. "What was the topic?"

"Community rebuilding in post-war America," she said proudly. "I used Fiona and Dad as my main sources."

Calvin walked out from the back press room, wiping dark ink from his hands with a blue shop towel.

He looked at his daughter, then at me, his face filled with a peace and contentment he had thought was lost forever when his wife had passed away years ago.

"You ready for dinner, Maya?" Calvin asked.

"Only if we’re going to Lydia’s," Maya declared, crossing her arms with playful authority. "It’s Friday!"
