Chapter 10 - The Christmas Table

Christmas morning arrived once again at thirty-one Elm Street.

A soft layer of fresh snow covered the lawn, sparkling under the bright morning sun. The house was alive with music, warmth, and the heavenly scent of roasting turkey, cinnamon rolls, and fresh pine.

In the kitchen, Ava and Noah were decorating cookies, laughing as sprinkles scattered across the counter—just as they had two years ago, but without any underlying fear or tension.

Marcus was in the living room, helping set up the roaring fire in the fireplace, while Sarah sat at the counter, sipping spiced cider and catching up with Emily.

By five o'clock, the table was set.

The polished cherrywood table glistened under the warm light of the chandelier. Golden pinecone centerpieces, crystal glasses, and silver serving dishes were arranged meticulously across its surface.

Emily carried out a massive platter of roasted turkey, while Marcus brought in a steaming bowl of mashed potatoes.

"Everything is ready, Mom!" Emily called out cheerfully.

I walked into the dining room wearing a warm burgundy sweater. I looked around the room—at my daughter whose eyes were filled with strength and joy, at my grandchildren who were laughing freely, at dear friends who had stood by us in our darkest hours, and at the house that Henry and I had built together.

Marcus pulled out a chair for Sarah, then sat beside Noah. Emily sat next to Ava, smiling broadly.

At the head of the table stood my sturdy cherrywood chair.

There was no question about who belonged there. No one claimed it, no one challenged it, and no one took it for granted.

I walked over, rested my hand for a moment on the smooth wood of the headrest—feeling the quiet, enduring presence of Henry’s memory—and sat down comfortably in my place.

I raised my glass of sparkling wine, looking around at the radiant faces of my family.

"To family," I said, my voice filled with profound warmth and absolute peace. "To courage, to truth, and to always knowing your place at the table."

May you like

"To family!" everyone echoed, their glasses clinking together in joyful harmony.

Outside, the snow fell gently over the quiet street, but inside thirty-one Elm Street, the house was fuller, warmer, and stronger than it had ever been.
