Chapter 15 - A CALCULATED STRIKE

By nine o'clock the following morning, Julian Vance executed the next phase of his warfare—not in a secret meeting, but on the public stage.
A press release was issued to every major financial journal and legal news outlet in the state, headline reading: 'Prominent Attorney Thomas Miller Sued for Corporate Fraud and Asset Concealment by Secret Half-Brother.'
By ten, television news vans were parked along the curb outside Thomas’s law firm downtown. Reporters holding microphones crowded the glass entrance, demanding statements regarding the allegations that Arthur Miller’s estate had laundered trust funds to establish the firm.
Inside the executive boardroom, the senior partners of the firm sat around the glass conference table, their faces pale and furious.
"This is a disaster, Thomas!" declared Richard Hayes, the firm’s managing partner, slamming a printed newspaper onto the table. "Our high-profile corporate clients are threatening to pull their retainers! The state bar association has already sent an inquiry asking for an internal audit!"
Thomas sat at the head of the table, impeccably dressed in a dark suit, his expression calm, measured, and unshakeable. Beside him sat Sarah, wearing a tailored navy blazer, holding a tablet containing their own financial counter-records.
"Julian Vance wants us to panic, Richard," Thomas said calmly, his voice steady and commanding. "He wants us to hide behind corporate non-disclosure agreements like my father used to do. He expects me to offer him an out-of-court settlement to keep this quiet."
"Then do it!" Richard urged, leaning forward. "Pay him off! Give him twenty million from the reserve fund and make him sign a non-disparagement clause! We cannot afford a public scandal!"
"No," Sarah spoke up, her voice ringing clearly across the room. Every partner turned to look at her. "If Thomas pays him off under the table, it proves Julian’s point. It tells the world that Thomas is just as corrupt as his father was—that he uses money to buy silence."
"Mrs. Miller, with all due respect, this is a corporate law firm, not a marriage counseling session!" Richard snapped.
Thomas stood up slowly, his towering frame casting a long shadow over the table. The authority in his posture was absolute, radiating a cold power that instantly silenced the room.
"My wife is right, Richard," Thomas said, looking at every partner individually. "For fifteen years, this firm operated in the shadows of my father's legacy. We swept awkward truths under rugs and hid behind legal technicalities. I spent the last six months fixing my life at home because I stopped living a lie. I will not allow this firm to go back into the dark."
"So what do you propose to do?" Richard asked, exasperated.

Thomas picked up his leather briefcase and looked down at Sarah, who offered him a proud, unwavering smile.
"I’m calling a full press conference in the lobby at two o'clock," Thomas declared. "I am going to open our financial records to the public. Every dollar, every wire transfer, every mistake my father made. I am going to lay the absolute truth on the table for the entire world to see."
