Chapter 9 - The Foundation

A year after Maya’s birth, I officially launched the Sterling-Vance Family Foundation.

The foundation’s flagship initiative—The Maya Project—was a twenty-million-dollar endowed fund designed to provide emergency financial, legal, and medical housing support for women experiencing high-risk pregnancies without family support systems.

On a crisp autumn morning, I stood on the stage of the newly constructed Maya Sterling Maternal Center in downtown Chicago, addressing a crowd of two hundred medical professionals, community leaders, and young mothers.

I wore an elegant burgundy suit, my hair styled naturally, standing tall and confident behind the wooden podium.

In the front row sat Martha holding eighteen-month-old Maya, who was wearing a little white sweater and clapping her tiny hands enthusiastically whenever the crowd applauded.

“Two years ago,” I began, my voice clear, steady, and carrying effortlessly across the auditorium, “I found myself lying on a hospital bed at thirty-two weeks pregnant, terrified, alone, and facing a medical crisis after being abandoned by the very people who were supposed to protect me.”

The audience grew quiet, listening intently.

“On that night, I realized a hard truth,” I continued. “Family is not defined by blood, by legal last names, or by shared DNA. Family is defined by showing up. Family is defined by love that protects, love that respects, and love that stays when the storm hits.”

I looked down at my daughter in the front row, whose bright blue eyes were fixed on me with pure, unadulterated trust.

“The Maya Project was built so that no woman will ever have to lie on a hospital floor alone wondering how she will protect her unborn child,” I said. “It is built to ensure that every mother has a shield, a sanctuary, and a community standing behind her.”

The auditorium erupted into a thunderous standing ovation.

As I walked down the stage steps, Martha handed Maya to me. My daughter wrapped her little arms around my neck, resting her soft cheek against mine.

“Mama,” Maya whispered happily.

“I love you, my sweet girl,” I murmured, holding her close against my heart.
