Chapter 5 - The Bank Vault

The morning sun broke through the clouds in thin, gray streaks. The rain had finally stopped, leaving the city slick and reflective under the dawn sky.
I stood across the street from the Central First Bank building in downtown, wearing a dark coat and dark sunglasses. Beside me, Julian was typing rapidly on a handheld signal jammer, while David kept the engine of his SUV running in the alleyway behind us.
"The bank opens at 9:00 AM," Julian said, checking his watch. "It’s 8:45 AM. I’ve been monitoring Aegis’s private security radio traffic. Marcus Kane’s team knows about the safety deposit box. They filed an emergency court injunction twenty minutes ago to freeze all assets tied to Emma’s trust fund."
"How long do we have before the court order hits the bank’s legal department?" I asked.
"Fifteen minutes," Julian replied grimly. "Maybe twenty if the clerk is slow. Once that order arrives, the bank manager won't even let you step into the vault room."
"I don't need twenty minutes," I said. "I just need five."
At 8:58 AM, the heavy brass doors of the bank were unlocked by a elderly security guard. I walked across the street, my heart pounding against my ribs like a trapped drum. In my purse, I carried Emma’s birth certificate, my legal guardianship documents, and the small silver key Callista had given me two years ago when she established Emma’s medical trust fund—a gesture I had once thought was an act of auntly love, but now knew was just a convenient shield for her money laundering.
I walked straight to the counter.
"Good morning," the young female teller said with a polite smile. "How can I help you today?"
"I need access to Safety Deposit Box 408," I said, placing my driver's license and Emma’s trust documents on the marble counter. "I am the primary legal trustee."
The teller smiled, typing the box number into her system. "Of course, Ms. Vance. Let me just verify the trustee authorization records..."
She paused. Her eyes scanned the screen, and her smile flickered slightly.
"Is there a problem?" I asked, keeping my voice smooth and neutral.
"Um... there’s an administrative flag on this file," she said, looking up with hesitation. "It says there’s a pending legal hold request being processed by our corporate compliance department. I might need to call my manager—"
"My daughter passed away four days ago," I said, looking her directly in the eyes. I pulled a folded copy of Emma’s funeral program from my coat and placed it beside my ID. "This box contains her original birth certificate and her burial insurance documentation. If your corporate department wants to delay a grieving mother from retrieving her child’s final papers, you can call your manager. But you will also call the news crew sitting in the van parked right outside your front door."
The teller looked at the funeral program, seeing the photo of Emma holding her stuffed rabbit. Her face softened instantly with deep sympathy and shame.
"I... I'm so sorry for your loss," she whispered. She bypassed the system prompt on her keyboard. "Follow me, please."
She led me through the heavy reinforced iron gate into the quiet, cool air of the bank vault. She unlocked the outer lock of Box 408 with her master key, stepped back, and allowed me to insert the small silver key.
The lock clicked open.
I pulled the long metal drawer out and carried it to a private viewing booth, closing the door behind me.
My hands trembled as I lifted the lid.
Inside the box lay three items: a bundle of cash, a passport under Callista’s name with a foreign visa stamp, and a heavy, black titanium USB key card embossed with the gold logo of Aegis Bio Corp – Executive Level 5.
This was it. The second half of the key.
Suddenly, the red emergency light above the booth door began to flash silently. The heavy vault door outside clicked as mechanical locks began to engage.
Through the frosted glass of the booth, I heard loud, aggressive voices raised near the teller counter.

"We have a federal warrant and a corporate injunction!" a harsh, commanding voice shouted. "Block all exits! Nobody leaves the vault area!"
Marcus Kane’s security team had arrived.
