Chapter 3 - The Scramble for Survival

The penthouse at the Manhattan Grand Hotel was suffocating.

Cole paced back and forth across the plush carpet, his hair disheveled, his eyes bloodshot and wide with panic. Sierra sat on the edge of the king-sized bed, wrapped in a silk robe, sipping an espresso while scrolling nervously through her phone.

“This is insane, Cole!” Sierra whined, her tone sharp and shrill. “My credit card was declined at the hotel boutique this morning! The manager came up to the room and said our corporate suite reservation was canceled by Vanguard Management! What is going on?”

“Shut up, Sierra!” Cole roared, slamming his fist onto the mahogany desk. “Just shut the hell up for one minute!”

He picked up his personal phone and dialed his uncle, Senator Richard Whitmore—the man who had provided Cole with his political connections and social standing in New York high society.

“Uncle Richard!” Cole blurted out as soon as the line connected. “Thank God you answered. I need you to make a call to the Federal District Court in Connecticut. William Bennett’s old cronies have frozen my accounts!”

There was a long, icy pause on the other end of the line.

“Cole,” Senator Whitmore said, his voice dropping into a low, terrifying pitch. “Did you touch that girl?”

Cole froze. “What? No! We had an argument, that’s all! She took the kids and—”

“Don't lie to me, you fool!” Richard barked through the phone. “Arthur Harris delivered a confidential folder to my office in Washington two hours ago! It contains security footage from your apartment, medical reports of bruises on her wrist, and bank records showing you funneled two million dollars from Whitmore Capital into your mistress’s dummy accounts!”

Cole felt the air leave his lungs. “Richard, please... you have to help me. If the board removes me, I’m ruined!”

“Help you?” Richard let out a bitter, humorless laugh. “Do you have any idea who Judge William Bennett was? Half the federal judges on the East Coast owed their appointments to him! The Bennett Trust holds paper on my campaign debt, Cole! If I step anywhere near this fire, they will destroy my political career before sundown!”

“Uncle Richard—”

“You are on your own, Cole,” Richard said coldly. “Do not call this number again. And if you attempt to use the Whitmore family name to pull favors, I will personally ensure the prosecutor fast-tracks your embezzlement indictment.”

Click.

The line went dead.

Cole stared at the phone in horror. He turned around to face Sierra, who was now hastily packing her designer leather bags.

“Where do you think you’re going?” Cole demanded, taking a step toward her.

“I’m leaving, Cole!” Sierra spat, tossing her gold jewelry into her handbag. “I didn't sign up to be associated with a broke, disgraced fraud! You told me you owned that penthouse! You told me you ran Whitmore Capital!”

“I do run it!” Cole yelled, grabbing her arm.

“Let go of me!” Sierra shrieked, pulling her arm away with a look of utter disgust. “You don't own anything! You’re just a little man who lived off his wife’s trust fund! Look at you—you’re pathetic!”

She grabbed her bags and stormed out of the suite, slamming the heavy door behind her.

Cole stood alone in the grand hotel room. The silence pressed against his ears like a physical weight. He reached into his pocket and pulled out his wallet.

Inside was three hundred dollars in cash.

That was all he had left in the entire world.

A sudden knock at the hotel door made him jump. Cole sprinted to the door, a sudden wave of desperate hope washing over him. Maybe it was Lauren. Maybe she had come back to bargain. Maybe she just wanted him to beg.

He ripped the door open. “Lauren!”

Standing in the hallway were two tall men in dark suits, holding leather briefcases. Beside them stood a court processor wearing a high-visibility badge.

“Cole Whitmore?” the processor asked calmly.

“Yes...” Cole stammered.

“You have been formally served with a petition for absolute divorce, full legal and physical custody of Noah and Lily Whitmore, an emergency restraining order, and a federal summons for grand larceny and corporate embezzlement.”

The man handed him a stack of legal documents nearly four inches thick.

On the top page, stamped in bold crimson ink, were the words:

BENNETT V. WHITMORE – COURT OF CHANCERY, STATE OF CONNECTICUT.

Cole dropped the stack onto the floor. The papers scattered across the hallway tile like fallen snow.
