Chapter 13 - The Trap in London

Marcus opened his leather folder and slid a thick stack of documents stamped with the official crest of the British Metropolitan Police across the table to Victoria’s lead barrister.

The attorney put on his reading glasses, scanning the top page. Within five seconds, his face drained of all color.

"What is that?" Victoria demanded, her voice rising in pitch. "What did he just hand you?"

"Miss Harrell..." the barrister stammered, looking up at Victoria in absolute terror. "This is... this is a criminal fraud notice from the Crown Prosecution Service."

Victoria grabbed the paper from his hand, her eyes darting across the text.

Victoria’s hands shook so violently the paper rattled in the quiet room. "Valerio Valenti? I... I don't know who that is! I never spoke to any Valenti!"

"You didn't speak to him directly, Victoria," David explained smoothly. "You spoke to his Swiss wealth manager. The man who funded your litigation loan shark in Zurich was Valerio Valenti—the fugitive Italian financier whose European assets were seized by the Italian State Police six months ago."

Clara walked back to her seat, sitting down gracefully.

"Valerio was looking for a back door into the North American Energy Grid," Clara stated coldly. "He used your greed and your jealousy of me to buy control of the Aegis Line trust. You didn't just file a fraudulent probate claim, Victoria. You entered into a conspiracy with an indicted international money launderer."

Victoria dropped the paper onto the table as if it had burned her skin. She looked at Clara, her eyes wide with a horrifying realization.

"You... you knew," Victoria whispered, her voice breaking. "You knew about the Zurich loan before I even stepped onto the plane to New York."

"Arthur’s intelligence network monitors every asset movement associated with Valenti’s former network," Clara said calmly. "The moment your lawyers filed in London, we traced the money back to Zurich in two hours."

Victoria fell back into her chair, her body trembling, all her icy arrogance completely shattered into dust.

"What... what are you going to do to me?" Victoria wept, tears streaming down her flawless cheeks, ruining her makeup. "Are you going to send me to prison like father?"

The room fell into a heavy silence.

Clara looked at her sister. She saw the woman who had laughed when Clara was forced out of the family mansion years ago. She saw the sister who had never offered a single word of comfort when Clara was fighting for her freedom.

And yet, Clara felt no desire for revenge. Revenge was an anchor that pulled you down into the mud with your enemies.

"I’m not sending you to prison, Victoria," Clara said softly.

Victoria looked up, stunned, her tear-streaked face filled with disbelief. "You... you're not?"

"My legal team has already provided the British authorities with evidence showing that you were manipulated by Valenti’s broker," Clara explained calmly. "The criminal charges against you will be dropped on the condition that you sign a full confession regarding the forgery, relinquish all claims to the Harrell estate, and enter a court-monitored financial rehabilitation program."

Victoria stared at Clara, her mouth slightly open. "And... and the five million?"

"The five-million-dollar offer is off the table," Clara said firmly, her amber-gold gaze holding Victoria’s without a trace of hesitation. "You will receive a modest monthly stipend from a restricted trust controlled by my attorneys. Enough to live simply in a modest apartment. Enough to eat, to pay health insurance, and to learn how to earn an honest living."

Clara leaned forward, her voice filled with absolute, unyielding power.

"You don't get to be a millionaire off the pain you caused me, Victoria," Clara said softly. "But I won't let you starve in the gutter either. That is the difference between you and me."

May you like

Victoria lowered her head, weeping silently, her pride completely dismantled, her arrogance replaced by a profound, humbled quiet.

"Sign the papers, Victoria," Marcus said, placing a pen in her trembling hand. "And let your sister live her life."
