Chapter 2 - DIAGNOSIS OF DECEIT

The smell of antiseptic and the rhythmic beep-beep-beep of a heart monitor greeted me when I pulled myself out of the dark.

White ceiling tiles. Fluorescent lights masked by soft panels. An IV drip hooked into the back of my left hand.

"Clara?"

I turned my head slowly. Daniel was sitting in a plastic chair beside the hospital bed, his dark hair disheveled, his eyes bloodshot, and his suit jacket crumpled as if he had been sleeping in it. He reached out instantly, wrapping his broad, warm hands around mine.

"Daniel..." my voice was raw, barely a croak. "The baby... is he—"

"He's okay, sweetheart," Daniel whispered, leaning forward to kiss my forehead, his tears wetting my cheek. "Leo is safe. You had severe stress-induced Braxton Hicks contractions that triggered early labor signs, but the doctors managed to stop it with medication. You’re at thirty-two weeks now. They want you on strict bed rest for at least forty-eight hours."

I let out a shuddering breath, the relief washing over me so intensely that tears poured down my face. "He's okay... thank God."

Then, like a flood gate bursting open, the memory of the baby shower returned. My mother’s screams. Vanessa’s delicate lies. The horror of thirty guests watching my family tear my dignity to shreds.

I pulled my hand back from Daniel’s grip, staring at him intently.

Daniel froze, his face falling. "Clara... Nora told me everything that happened before the paramedics arrived."

"Is it true, Daniel?" I asked, my voice deadly quiet despite the tears. "Did you ever... did you ever have anything with Vanessa before us?"

Daniel looked genuinely bewildered, then horrified. "Are you out of your mind?! Clara, I didn't even know your sister’s last name until six months after we started dating! I met her twice at family dinners, and both times she barely said three words to me! Where would she even get a insane story like that?"

"She told my mother you slept with her," I said, my heart breaking all over again. "She told Mom that I trapped you with a fake pregnancy two years ago to steal you away from her."

Daniel stood up, pacing the small hospital room, his knuckles white as he clenched his fists. "That sick, pathologically jealous... I am going to call them right now. I am going to call your mother and—"

"No," a voice sounded from the doorway.

Nora stepped into the room, carrying two large travel mugs of coffee and a thick manila envelope. She looked exhausted, but her eyes burned with a fierce, calculating energy.

"Don't call them, Daniel," Nora said, closing the door behind her. "Calling them gives them control. It gives them the drama they want. What we need to do is figure out why Vanessa pulled this stunt yesterday."

"Why?" I echoed bitterly. "Because she hates me, Nora. She’s hated me our whole lives. Mom always put her on a pedestal, and the moment I had something that gave me joy, they had to destroy it."

"It's deeper than sibling rivalry, Clara," Nora said grimly. She set the coffees down and placed the manila envelope onto my tray table. "After the ambulance took you away, Mrs. Alden stayed behind to help me clean up the mess. While we were sweeping, I found Vanessa’s purse. She left it on the entry table in her hurry to leave with your mother."

Daniel frowned. "You looked through her purse?"

"You damn right I did," Nora said proudly. "And I found something inside that explains everything. Vanessa isn't just jealous, Clara. She’s desperate."

Nora pulled three folded sheets of paper from the envelope and laid them flat on my blanket.

They were medical records from a private fertility clinic downtown.

I scanned the top document, my eyes widening as I read the clinical terms.

Patient: Vanessa Whitaker. Diagnosis: Severe Uterine Factor Infertility / Hysterectomy recommended due to advanced fibroids. Date: Four months ago.

"She isn't pregnant," I whispered, horror creeping up my spine. "Vanessa... she isn't pregnant at all."

"She’s been faking it," Nora confirmed, leaning over the bed. "She’s been wearing padded undergarments and telling your mother she’s due in three months. But look at the second document."

I picked up the second paper. It was a legal draft for an independent adoption agency, requesting an expedited private placement for an infant. The prospective mother listed was Vanessa Whitaker. The expected delivery date was... two months from now.

"She was planning to buy or privately adopt a baby," Daniel realized, his voice trembling with anger. "And she was going to pretend it was her biological child to outshine Clara in front of your mother."

"It gets worse," Nora said, her voice dropping into a dangerous whisper. "Look at the third paper, Clara. Look at who the donor profile was requested from."

I looked at the last document. It was an official inquiry sent from Vanessa’s personal email to a regional surrogacy bank, requesting explicit access to medical files and biological matches associated with Daniel’s family medical history.

My breath hitched in my throat.

Vanessa didn't just want a baby. She was trying to secure a child that shared Daniel’s genetic lineage—or frame a narrative where Daniel was the father—to completely destroy my marriage, steal my child’s inheritance from our grandfather’s estate, and secure her absolute reign over my mother’s affection forever.

"She’s sick," I breathed, clutching the papers to my chest. "She’s completely out of her mind."

"She’s dangerous," Daniel corrected, reaching over to touch my face, his eyes fierce with determination. "And she is never coming near you or our son again."
