Chapter 6 - The Trap Sprung

The night air at the abandoned freight yard in Chula Vista was thick with smog and the distant rumble of the interstate.

Rain dripped off the rusty corrugated metal of old shipping containers, creating a dreary, rhythmic tapping sound. Three black unmarked SUVs were parked half a mile away, tucked inside an alleyway.

Inside the tactical command trailer, Ethan and I sat beside Detective Ramirez, watching three separate monitors feeding real-time night-vision video from hidden cameras mounted on Hank’s chest and inside his vehicle.

Hank was sitting in the driver’s seat of his beat-up Ford truck, parked beneath a flickering streetlight. A thick yellow envelope filled with cut newspaper—styled to look like stack of hundred-dollar bills— sat on the passenger seat.

“Target vehicle approaching,” an officer’s voice crackled over the radio transmission. “A beat-up silver sedan with dark tint, Baja California license plates. Two occupants.”

On the screen, I watched the silver car pull slowly up next to Hank’s truck. The driver-side window rolled down.

It was Kelsey.

Her mascara was washed away, replaced by deep dark circles around her eyes. She looked frantic, her hands gripping the steering wheel so tight her knuckles were white.

“Hank!” Vivian’s sharp voice echoed through the audio feed. She was in the passenger seat, wearing a dark hoodie, her face half-hidden by a scarf. “Is anyone with you?”

Hank lowered his window. “No. I’m alone, Vivian. I did what you asked.”

“Did you bring the cash?” Vivian demanded, her voice sharp with greed and paranoia. She didn't ask how he was. She didn't ask if the police had questioned him. She didn't even ask if her pregnant daughter was alive or dead.

“It’s here,” Hank said, holding up the thick yellow envelope. “Fifty thousand. I pawned my tools and took out a high-interest loan on the house.”

Vivian breathed a sigh of relief, a cruel smirk appearing on her face even in the low green night-vision feed. “Good. Hand it over.”

“No,” Hank said. His voice didn't shake. He didn't twitch. For the first time in his miserable life, my father spoke with quiet, absolute defiance. “Not until you tell me why you did it, Vivian.”

Vivian sneered. “Don't start with me, Hank! Madison was acting like a spoiled brat! She stole those diamonds from Kelsey!”

“They were Charles’s diamonds, Vivian!” Hank snapped, his voice rising through the microphone. “They belonged to Ethan’s family! You threw boiling milk on our pregnant daughter over a necklace!”

“She threatened to call the police on Kelsey!” Vivian yelled back, her rage boiling over. “She was going to ruin your favorite daughter’s life over a stupid trinket! She got what she deserved! Now give me the damn money so we can leave!”

In the command trailer, Ramirez looked at me. “We have her on tape confessing to the motive and the act.”

“Take them,” I said quietly.

Ramirez pressed his radio button. “All units, move in! GO, GO, GO!”

Suddenly, the silent freight yard erupted into chaos.

Bright white spotlights cut through the darkness, blinding the silver sedan from three directions. Siren wails tore through the night sky as two heavy armored tactical vehicles surged forward, blocking the front and rear of Kelsey’s car.

“POLICE! FEDERAL MARSHALS! PUT YOUR HANDS OUT THE WINDOW!” voices thundered through loudspeakers.

Kelsey shrieked, throwing her hands over her head. “Mom! Mom, they found us! What do we do?!”

“Drive! Kelsey, floor it!” Vivian screamed, grabbing the steering wheel herself and jamming her foot toward the gas pedal from the passenger seat.

The silver sedan roared to life, tires screeching wildly on the wet asphalt, swerving toward the narrow gap between Hank’s truck and an abandoned container.

“DO NOT ATTEMPT TO ESCAPE!” tactical officers screamed.

Kelsey’s car slammed violently into the side of an armored police SUV. The impact crumpled the hood of the silver sedan with a loud, metallic crunch, deploying the airbags with a loud bang. Smoke began pouring from the engine bay.

Tactical officers in full gear surged forward, smashing the driver and passenger side windows with glass-breakers.

“GET OUT OF THE VEHICLE! DOWN ON THE GROUND NOW!”

Kelsey was dragged out through the shattered window, sobbing hysterically, her designer clothes soaked in rain and engine fluid as she was slammed against the hood and handcuffed.

Vivian fought back like a cornered animal. She bit an officer’s arm, scratching and screaming profanities. “Get your hands off me! I didn't do anything! It was a cooking accident! My daughter lied to you!”

An officer dragged her out, forcing her down onto the wet, dirty pavement. Her scarf pulled away, exposing her twisted, angry face to the glare of the police spotlights.

In the trailer, Ethan wrapped his arm around my shoulders as we watched my mother being forced to her knees, metal handcuffs clicking tightly around her wrists.

She looked directly into one of the camera units mounted on a tactical vest. For a moment, it felt as though she was looking straight through the screen at me.

Her dream of freedom, money, and escaping the consequences of her cruelty was officially over.
