Chapter 8 - The Falling Empire

"POLICE! DROP YOUR WEAPONS! DROP YOUR WEAPONS IMMEDIATELY!"

Loudspeakers boomed from the snow-covered street outside. Heavy tactical boots thundered through the broken front doors of the bank lobby.

"Traitorous bitch!" Harrison shrieked, losing all sanity, swinging the revolver directly toward my face.

BANG!

Marcus moved with lightning speed. He tackled Harrison sideways into the steel deposit lockers, slamming the gun out of his hand before he could pull the trigger. The gunshot went wild, shattering a light fixture overhead in a shower of sparks and plaster.

The two masked thugs dropped their weapons instantly, throwing their hands into the air as six heavily armed State Police tactical officers flooded the vault hallway, lasers painting the walls in bright red dots.

"ON THE GROUND! GET ON THE GROUND NOW!"

Julian dropped his crowbar, collapsing onto his knees, weeping hysterically as officers slammed him flat onto the carpet and clicked heavy steel handcuffs around his wrists.

Harrison thrashed wildly beneath Marcus, screaming obscenities, his face pressed hard against the cold steel floor of the vault.

"Harrison Vance," the tactical commander barked, kneeling on Harrison’s back and pulling his arms behind him. "You are under arrest for Murder in the First Degree, Armed Robbery, Corporate Fraud, and Attempted Murder."

I stood frozen against the deposit boxes, the plastic pouch clutched tightly in my hands, watching Harrison get dragged to his feet.

His face was bruised, his expensive suit ruined, his eyes filled with a hollow, terrifying horror as he realized his life was over. He looked at me—standing tall, unhurt, holding the evidence that would seal his fate forever.

"You..." Harrison rasped, blood trickling from his lip. "You ruined us..."

I looked at him with zero pity, zero regret, and absolute finality.

"My father built his life with his own hands," I said softly, my voice echoing down the hallway. "You stole yours. And now, the debt is paid."

Forty-eight hours later.

The news storm that hit the nation was unprecedented.

The arrest of Harrison Vance, Julian Vance, and Clara Vance made front-page headlines from The New York Times to international financial networks. The federal indictment detailed eleven years of corporate fraud, bribery, tax evasion, and the reopened murder charges for the 2014 plane crash.

Clara was arrested at her luxury apartment in Manhattan six hours after the bank raid, charged as a co-conspirator to corporate theft and obstruction of justice. Vance Vance was taken into custody at his private club.

The Vance legal defense collapsed before it even began. Faced with the mountain of forensic evidence, the physical maintenance log, and Harrison’s recorded confession in the bank vault, Harrison’s attorneys initiated plea negotiations to avoid the death penalty, agreeing to a sentence of life imprisonment without the possibility of parole.

Clara was sentenced to twenty-five years in federal prison for fraud and conspiracy. Julian and Vance received fifteen years each for their roles in the armed robbery and corporate corruption.

The predators who had spent decades leeching off my family’s wealth were finally swept away into the dark.
