Chapter 5 - Cornered Beasts

"You have five seconds to unlock that door before security breaks it down," I said, standing my ground behind my desk. My hand hovered an inch above the alarm trigger.
Connor took two steps forward, his face distorted with rage. "You think you’ve won, don't you? You think you and Ethan get to live in your little Lincoln Park fairytale with that child?!"
"Leave Sophie out of your mouth," I warned, my tone dropping into a deadly register.
"She’s a Hale!" Connor shouted. "She’s my niece! And you—you were my wife! You were nobody before me! A middle-class girl from Naperville who worked as a paralegal! I gave you a life! I gave you a name!"
"You gave me five years of gaslighting, emotional abuse, and financial fraud," I corrected him coldly. "And then you traded me in for my best friend, who just handed us the keys to your prison cell."
Connor laughed—a frantic, unhinged sound that echoed off the glass walls of my office. "You think Serena’s red folder is going to hold up in court? My lawyers will destroy her credibility in ten minutes! She’s an accomplice! She took money!"
"Serena signed a full immunity agreement with the State Attorney’s office two hours ago, Connor," I replied calmly. "She isn't a co-conspirator anymore. She’s the state’s lead witness."
The color drained instantly from Connor’s face. He stumbled back a step, hitting his back against the locked door. "What?"
"She gave them everything," I continued, pushing my advantage. "The offshore accounts, the forged trust signatures, the bribe to the adoption agency, and the emails proving you deliberately set out to ruin Ethan’s legal practice. It’s over, Connor. You’re not fighting a civil suit anymore. You’re facing federal wire fraud, embezzlement, and conspiracy charges."
"You ruined me," Connor whispered, his eyes wide with a terrifying mix of disbelief and hatred. "You were supposed to stay quiet. You were supposed to stay alone."
"I didn't ruin you, Connor," I said, leaning over my desk and looking him dead in the eye. "You ruined yourself the moment you believed your own arrogance made you invincible."
Outside my office door, heavy footsteps echoed down the hallway, followed by loud pounding on the wood.
"Madeline!" Ethan’s voice boomed through the door. "Madeline, open the door!"
Connor panicked. He looked around the office like a trapped animal searching for an escape route that didn't exist. He reached into his coat pocket, pulling out a thick manila envelope, and slammed it onto my desk.
"You think Ethan is a saint?" Connor hissed, his voice dropping to a harsh whisper. "Ask him about the girl in D.C., Madeline. Ask him why Sarah was really driving to the courthouse that day! He used you to get back at me! He doesn't love you—he just wanted to take the last thing I had left!"
"Ethan loves me," I said with absolute certainty. "And more importantly, he loves his daughter. Something you are incapable of understanding."
The lock clicked as building security used a master key. The door flew open, and Ethan stormed inside, flanked by two armed security guards.
Ethan saw Connor standing near my desk, and in one fluid movement, he stepped between us, grabbing Connor by the lapels of his jacket and slamming him back against the wall.
"Touch her again and I will tear you apart," Ethan snarled, his eyes blazing with a fury I had never seen in him before.
"Get your hands off me!" Connor shrieked, struggling against Ethan's iron grip. "Security! Arrest him! He’s assaulting me!"
"You crossed a boundary, Mr. Hale," the head security guard said, stepping forward with handcuffs already drawn. "You entered a private office after being served a trespass notice by this building twenty minutes ago. You’re coming with us."

As the guards pinned Connor’s arms behind his back and clicked the cuffs into place, Connor glared at Ethan, his breathing ragged.
"Look at the envelope on her desk, Ethan!" Connor yelled as he was dragged down the hallway. "Tell her the truth! Tell her why Sarah died!"
