Chapter 8 - The Ruined Vows

Arthur’s face instantly turned a violent shade of red. He stepped down from the altar, his eyes flashing with a mixture of embarrassment and fury.

"Charles!" he hissed, his voice echoing through the quiet tent. "What the hell are you doing? Get those kids out of here! Security! Get them out!"

Two burly security guards in black suits stepped forward, but the two sheriff's deputies beside Evelyn immediately intercepted them, flashing their badges.

"Do not touch them," the lead deputy said, his voice carrying the absolute authority of the law. "We are here to execute a court order."

"A court order?" Brenda shrieked, her perfect, manicured face contorting with panic. "Arthur, what is happening? Who are these people?"

Evelyn Vance stepped forward, opening her leather briefcase with a crisp, professional click. She pulled out a stack of documents and handed them directly to Arthur.

"Arthur Vale," Evelyn said, her voice amplified by the quiet of the pavilion. "You are hereby served with an emergency ex-parte order granting sole legal and physical custody of Lucy, Rachel, and April Vale to their grandfather, Charles Hartley. You are also served with a temporary restraining order, effective immediately, freezing all of your personal and corporate bank accounts, including the accounts of Vale & Hartley Shipping, pending a full audit of your financial fraud."

"This is absurd!" Arthur roared, ripping the papers from her hand and throwing them to the ground. "This is a fabrication! I am their father! You can't freeze my accounts! I have a wedding to pay for!"

"You don't have a penny, Arthur," I said, stepping forward. "Every dollar you used to pay for this catering, these flowers, and that dress was stolen from my daughter's trust fund. The judge has already issued a freeze. The caterers, the florists, and the venue owners will be notified by the end of the day that their checks will not clear."

A collective gasp rippled through the crowd of guests. Several of the local business owners who had provided services for the wedding immediately began whispering frantically among themselves.

"You old fool," Arthur snarled, stepping closer to me, his fists clenching. "You think you can ruin me with a few forged documents? I have the best lawyers in the state. I’ll have this thrown out by Monday morning."

"We didn't just bring documents, Arthur," Lucy’s quiet, clear voice cut through his rage.

She stepped forward, holding her mother’s black USB flash drive in her hand. She walked over to the DJ's sound system, which was connected to the grand pavilion’s overhead speakers. Before anyone could stop her, she plugged the drive into the laptop on the DJ’s booth.

"What is she doing?" Brenda screamed, lunging toward Lucy, but Rachel quickly stepped in her way, her small frame blocking the bride with an unyielding glare.

"Listen to the truth, Arthur," Lucy whispered, hitting the play button.

The overhead speakers crackled to life.

The sound of static filled the massive white tent, followed by the cold, unmistakable voice of Arthur Vale.

"Is she still breathing?" Brenda’s voice echoed through the pavilion, loud, clear, and sickeningly empty of warmth.

"Barely," Arthur’s recorded voice replied with that same cold, smug chuckle. "The doctors say her heart is failing. It’s perfect, Brenda. The house in the Historic District is ours. The trust fund will clear within thirty days... We’ll have the wedding at the estate... The kids? Don't worry about them. I'll dump them on the old man or send them to foster care."

The silence that followed the recording was absolute.

No one moved. No one spoke. The two hundred mourners who had stood frozen at Rose's funeral just days ago were now staring at Arthur and Brenda with a look of profound, stomach-churning disgust.

Brenda’s mother covered her face and began to weep. Arthur's corporate business partners silently stepped back, turning their faces away from the altar, their eyes filled with horror.
