Chapter 10 - The Promise on the Cliff

Two years later.

The summer sun hung low over the western horizon, painting the Atlantic Ocean in brilliant shades of gold, amber, and deep violet.

We were back in Connemara, standing on the high, grassy cliff above Aunt Nora’s stone cottage. The wild sea breeze blew gently through my hair, carrying the sweet scent of heather and ocean salt.

Below us, eight-year-old Mason was running across the beach with Barnaby the golden retriever, his clear, happy laughter echoing off the ancient rocks as he threw a wooden stick into the gentle surf.

Declan stood behind me, his strong arms wrapped securely around my waist, his chin resting gently on my shoulder.

I looked down at my left hand.

On my ring finger sat a simple, exquisite ring crafted from hammered Irish gold, set with a small, brilliant emerald—a ring Declan had hand-carved for me in his workshop, symbolizing loyalty, strength, and love.

"What are you thinking, my love?" Declan asked softly, his lips pressing a warm kiss against my neck.

I leaned back against his solid chest, watching our son run freely along the golden shore.

I thought about that rainy summer night three years ago in Lake Forest, Illinois. I thought about the white party tents, the golden string lights, and the husband who pointed toward the house and told me to apologize or get out.

I remembered the cold fear I felt when I boarded that plane to Dublin with two suitcases and a sleeping three-year-old boy, wondering if I was strong enough to build a life on my own.

I had lost a fake marriage built on vanity and fear. But in losing it, I had found my true voice, saved my son’s life, brought a thirty-year-old crime into the healing light, and found a man who loved me for exactly who I was.

"I was thinking," I smiled, turning around in Declan's arms to look into his warm hazel eyes, "that getting out was the best choice I ever made."

Declan laughed—a deep, joyful sound that echoed across the cliffs—and pulled me into a deep, passionate kiss as the golden sun dipped below the edge of the Atlantic Ocean.

In the quiet, beautiful sanctuary we had built, there were no more secrets, no more fear, and no more apologies.

Only peace. Only home.
