Chapter 6 - The Federal Gambit

Thirty minutes later, I pulled the battered police cruiser into the underground parking garage of the Federal Building in downtown Chicago. Elena had radioed ahead before the shootout destroyed her comms—she had survived the ambush uninjured after taking down one of the attackers, while state police backup arrested the second.

Waiting for me in the secure basement garage was Assistant Special Agent in Charge Marcus Sterling of the FBI Cyber and Organized Crime Division. He was accompanied by six heavily armed federal tactical officers.

As I stepped out of the cruiser, holding the black binder, Agent Sterling stepped forward, offering a stern but respectful nod.

"Mrs. Vance," Sterling said, his voice deep and authoritative. "Detective Ruiz informed us you possess the master ledger for the Pharos Syndicate."

"I do," I said, handing the heavy binder directly to him. "And I want federal protection for Detective Ruiz and myself, along with immediate federal indictments for everyone named in those pages."

Sterling opened the binder, his eyes scanning the detailed entries. A slow whistle escaped his lips. "This is bigger than we anticipated. This ledger links Daniel Vance directly to cartel money laundering and municipal construction sabotage across five major infrastructure projects."

"Daniel didn't act alone," I stated firmly. "He was the architect, but Commissioner Vance and the state safety inspectors took millions to sign off on compromised structures. They put thousands of lives at risk—and my daughter died because she stumbled upon proof of it."

"We're taking Daniel into federal custody within the hour," Sterling assured me. "He’s being transferred from the county jail to the Metropolitan Correctional Center. Under federal jurisdiction, his high-priced lawyer won't be able to pull local political favors."

"Good," I said. "Because I’m not done with him yet."

"What do you mean?" Sterling asked, looking at me curiously.

"Daniel is a coward," I said, my analytical mind piecing together the final strategy. "He built a secret escrow account in Zurich—account number CH-99-4021. He told his mother he was fleeing to South America, but the ledger lists a secondary transfer protocol that triggers automatically if he is incarcerated for more than thirty days."

"An asset-liquidation dead man's switch," Sterling recognized instantly.

"Exactly," I said. "If that switch triggers, seventy million dollars in stolen state funds will disappear into untraceable cryptocurrency mixing services. But if I can get thirty minutes of direct access to his primary private terminal under federal supervision, I can reverse the transfer script and freeze the funds permanently."

Sterling looked at me with newfound respect. "You were a senior digital examiner for twelve years, weren't you?"

"I was the best examiner the state attorney's office ever had," I replied quietly. "And Daniel made the fatal mistake of forgetting that when he married me."

Two hours later, inside a high-security federal interview room, Daniel was brought in, wearing heavy leg irons and handcuffs attached to a belly chain.

When he saw me sitting across the stainless-steel table alongside Agent Sterling and Prosecutor Callahan, his smug posture completely collapsed. He looked like a man who realized he had walked into a trap of his own making.

"Claire," Daniel rasped, his voice weak. "What are you doing here?"

"I'm here to show you your final architectural blueprint, Daniel," I said, sliding a single sheet of paper across the metal table.

He looked down at the paper. It was an official federal seizure order freezing every domestic and foreign account associated with his name, his shell companies, and his mother's trusts.

"You... you can't touch Zurich," Daniel stammered, sweat breaking out on his forehead. "That account is protected by Swiss privacy laws!"

"Not when the FBI presents a signed international mutual legal assistance treaty backed by a ledger detailing cartel money laundering," Agent Sterling informed him coldly. "Your Zurich escrow account was frozen twenty minutes ago, Mr. Vance. Mrs. Vance provided the exact cryptographic authorization codes from your hidden wall panel."

Daniel stared at me, his mouth opening and closing like a fish out of water. "You found the panel..."

"I found everything, Daniel," I said, leaning across the table until I was inches from his face. "I found the ledger. I found the bribes. I found the video of you threatening my daughter. And I found the proof that you knowingly built hollow concrete bridges that could have collapsed and killed hundreds of innocent people."

"I did it for us!" Daniel suddenly shouted, banging his handcuffed fists against the metal table. "I did it so we could be rich! So Lily could go to the best private schools in the country!"

"Don't you dare speak her name!" I roared, my voice carrying a authority that made even the federal agents in the room stiffen. "You didn't do it for her! You did it for your own bloated, pathetic ego! You traded my daughter's life for a flight case full of stolen cash!"

Daniel sank back into his chair, tears of self-pity finally rolling down his cheeks. "What do you want from me, Claire? What's left to take?"

"I want your full, unedited confession," I said coldly. "You will plead guilty to first-degree capital murder, federal corruption, and treasonous sabotage of public infrastructure. You will waive all rights to appeal, and you will give up every name in that syndicate."

"And if I refuse?" Daniel sneered weakly. "They'll put me in state prison."

"If you refuse," Agent Sterling stepped in, "we drop the federal protective custody status. We transfer you to the maximum-security wing at Cook County Jail, where three of the syndicate bosses you exposed in your ledger are currently awaiting trial. How long do you think you'll last in general population, Daniel?"

Daniel’s face went dead white. He looked at Sterling, then at Callahan, and finally at me.

May you like

In my eyes, he saw no mercy, no lingering affection, and no doubt. He saw only the end of his life.

"Where..." Daniel whispered, his voice trembling uncontrollably, "...where do I sign?"
