Chapter 9 - The Harbor & Ash Revisit

One year after the baptism dinner, I returned to Harbor & Ash.

I hadn't planned to go back. But my firm was celebrating the successful resolution of a major international asset recovery case, and Arthur Sterling had booked the main dining room for our firm's annual victory dinner.

The restaurant looked just as grand as it had that night—crystal chandeliers sparkling under golden light, white linen tablecloths glowing, the scent of delicate seafood and aged wine filling the air.

I wore a sleek, emerald-green silk gown that caught the light with every step I took. My hair was styled in soft waves, and I wore a simple silver pendant around my neck—a gift to myself to mark my thirty-fifth birthday.

As I sat at the head of the main table, surrounded by colleagues who respected me, friends who truly loved me, and partners who valued my intellect, the head server walked over to our table carrying a bottle of vintage champagne.

"Compliments of the house, Ms. Monroe," the server said respectfully, bowing slightly. "The owner wanted to personally welcome you back."

I smiled, holding up my glass as the waiter poured the sparkling golden liquid.

Arthur Sterling raised his glass toward me. "To Claire Monroe. The sharpest forensic mind in the Midwest, and the finest partner this firm has ever seen."

"To Claire!" the entire table echoed, clinking their glasses together.

I took a sip of champagne, feeling the light bubbles burst against my tongue.

I looked over at the far corner of the dining room—toward the private dining area where, exactly three hundred and sixty-five days ago, an $8,400 bill had been slid across a white tablecloth.

I remembered the fear I had felt for a fraction of a second when Diane had demanded that I pay. I remembered the heavy weight of five years of lies pressing down on my chest.

And I remembered the moment I had smiled, looked her in the eye, and uttered five simple words that had set me free:

“That baby isn’t mine.”
