Chapter 3 - The Lights Go Out

A ripple of uneasy whispering swept through the crowd. The two developers exchanged uncomfortable glances, slowly setting their drink glasses down on the table.

"You're crazy," Vanessa said, stepping forward, though a tremor of hesitation crept into her voice. "You're a senile old woman living off our charity! Daniel pays for everything here!"

"Daniel hasn't paid a mortgage payment in his life," I replied, opening the binder and sliding a certified document across the table toward the lead developer. "And as of seven minutes ago, the corporate authorization signatures he provided for your proposed resort venture have been declared fraudulent."

The developer picked up the paper, read it quickly, and turned his gaze toward Daniel. "Daniel... is this true? Is your mother the sole owner?"

Daniel opened his mouth, but no sound came out. His hands began to shake slightly against his beer bottle.

Before Vanessa could launch into another tirade, a sudden, heavy silence fell over the property as every string of decorative lights, every lantern, and the grand outdoor fireplace's electronic blower went dark simultaneously. The music cut off mid-beat.

The only remaining light came from the moon reflecting off the lake and the distant municipal fireworks lighting up the night sky.

Panic flickered through the crowd. "What happened to the power?" someone shouted.

"The auxiliary grid on this side of the estate runs on a private trustee account," I announced into the darkness. "And I just took it offline."
