Chapter 8 - The Crimson Backlash

Two months passed. The news of the Mitchell family's spectacular downfall had moved from the financial pages to the local gossip columns, and eventually, faded from public attention entirely.

The Belle Meade estate was undergoing massive renovations. The high iron gates had been removed, replaced with a welcoming stone archway that read: The Eleanor Carter Sanctuary.

I was driving back from a site inspection of the new facility late one evening. Ethan was with me, steering his dark SUV through the winding, poorly lit backroads of the Nashville hills. We had spent the afternoon reviewing the curriculum for the vocational training programs we were launching at the center.

"You look happy, Mom," Ethan said, glancing over at me with a genuine smile. He had spent the last few weeks working closely with Leo, who was proving to be an absolute prodigy in our logistics department. The shadow of the Mitchell scandal had lifted from his shoulders, replaced by a renewed sense of purpose.

"I am happy, Ethan," I replied, looking out at the passing trees. "We took an act of pure malice and turned it into something that will sustain hundreds of families. That is the best kind of revenge."

Suddenly, a pair of blinding high beams appeared in Ethan’s rearview mirror. A battered, dark sedan was tailing us incredibly close, its engine roaring in the quiet night.

"What is this guy doing?" Ethan muttered, tapping his brakes to signal the vehicle to back off.

Instead of slowing down, the sedan accelerated, slamming violently into our rear bumper. The impact jolted us forward, the seatbelts locking with a sharp jerk.

"Ethan!" I cried, gripping the dashboard.

"Hang on!" Ethan shouted, fighting to maintain control of the heavy SUV as the sedan swerved to the left, pulling up alongside us on the narrow two-lane road.

Through the tinted glass of the passing vehicle, under the amber glow of a streetlamp, I caught a glimpse of the driver.

It was Vanessa.

Her face was completely distorted by madness. Her eyes were wide, bloodshot, and frantic. She whipped the steering wheel to the right, deliberately ramming her car into our front fender, trying to force our vehicle off the road and down the steep, rocky embankment.

"She’s insane! She's trying to run us off the road!" Ethan yelled, his knuckles turning white as he steered against the impact.

Vanessa rammed us a second time, the screech of tearing metal echoing through the woods. But she had made a fatal error in her blind rage. She was driving a lightweight, ten-year-old sedan; Ethan was driving a fully armored, custom-built corporate SUV designed to withstand ballistic impacts.

When she slammed into us a third time, the momentum of her own vehicle recoiled violently against our reinforced frame. Her front tire blew out with a deafening pop. The dark sedan spun completely out of control, skidding across the asphalt before crashing into a massive oak tree at the side of the road.

The engine compartment immediately erupted into thick, black smoke.

Ethan slammed on the brakes, bringing our SUV to a halt a thirty feet away. For a second, the night was completely silent except for the hiss of our cooling radiator and the crackle of the fire beginning to spread under Vanessa’s hood.

"Mom, stay in the car!" Ethan gasped, unbuckling his seatbelt. "It’s going to blow!"

I didn't listen. I unbuckled my belt and opened the door, stepping out into the cool night air.
