Chapter 7 - The Cornered Wolf

The night was silent, the fog thick against the glass windows of the luxury penthouse suite Adrian had kept as his private retreat in Soho. It was 11:45 PM. The room was dark, save for the blue, flickering light of a single television screen showing the continuous financial news reports detailing the total liquidation of the Blackwell assets.

Adrian sat on the floor beside the Italian leather sofa, an empty bottle of expensive scotch rolling across the hardwood floor near his feet. His tie was gone, his custom-tailored shirt stained with liquor and sweat. He held a heavy, silver revolver between his hands, his fingers tracing the cold metal of the barrel with a frantic, rhythmic movement.

The private elevator chime sounded with a soft, mechanical ring.

Adrian scrambled to his feet, his arm rising, pointing the gun straight at the elevator doors as they slid open.

Julian Blackwell stepped out. The old man looked broken, his gold-headed cane trembling against the floor, his breathing shallow and rattling. He didn't look at the gun in his son's hand; he walked to the window and looked out at the foggy city skyline.

"The federal marshals are coming at dawn, Adrian," Julian said, his voice old, thin, and entirely stripped of the authority he had wielded for forty years. "The judges we had... they’ve turned off their phones. The governor just issued a public statement condemning our family. We are completely alone."

"It's that bitch," Adrian screamed, his voice cracking into a high, manic register as he waved the gun toward the television screen. "It’s Clara! She did this! She planned this for months, Dad! She sat at my table, she let me touch her, she let me think she was small... while she was digging our graves!"

"She didn't dig our graves, Adrian," Julian said softly, turning his head to look at his son with a mixture of profound disgust and regret. "We dug them ourselves when we thought we could treat a Davenport woman like an object. Her mother, Beatrice... she was the same way. Cold, analytical, and absolute. We forgot where her blood came from."

"I can kill her," Adrian whispered, his eyes turning completely dark, a terrifying, glassy emptiness filling his gaze. "I know where she’s staying. The safehouse in Brooklyn... I can drive down there right now. If I’m going down, she goes down with me."

Julian walked over to his son, his old hand reaching out and calmly catching the barrel of the gun, pushing it down toward the floor.

"You won't make it past the lobby, Adrian," Julian told him, his voice flat. "Marcus Vance’s agents are already parked across the street. It’s over. The only choice left is how you walk into that courtroom tomorrow—like a man, or like a dog."

Adrian looked at his father, the weapon slipping from his fingers and hitting the thick wool rug with a dull thud. He sank back down to the floor, his head dropping into his hands, his body shaking with the pathetic, terrified sobs of a bully who had finally run out of victims to terrify.
