Chapter 3 - Emergency at the Estate

By 1:00 PM, the atmosphere inside my mother’s sprawling suburban home in Chestnut Hill was pure chaos.

I knew this because Noah Vance, my chief legal counsel and head of corporate intelligence, was sitting in his black sedan across the street, sending me real-time updates via encrypted text messages.

Noah: Justin’s BMW just pulled into your mother's driveway at high speed. He almost hit the mailbox.

Noah: Uncle Howard arrived two minutes later. Looks like an emergency family council.

Noah: Sienna is inside. They’re all shouting. I can hear them from the curb.

I smiled slightly, taking a sip of espresso in my glass-walled executive office on the forty-second floor of Vane-Vanguard Tower.

"Should we invite them to the mediation session tomorrow, Miss Vane?" my executive assistant, Marcus, asked as he placed a blue folder on my desk.

"No," I replied, opening the folder. "Let them simmer in their own confusion for twenty-four hours. They need time to check their bank accounts and realize that the world they built on my silence has completely collapsed."

The blue folder contained the full audit report of the Vane Family Trust over the last six years.

As I flipped through the pages, my eyes narrowed.

I had known my mother was generous with my father's money, but I hadn't realized the extent of the corruption. Uncle Howard had embezzled over four hundred thousand dollars from the trust’s real-estate subsidiary by forging my father’s old signature on fraudulent consulting contracts. Justin had used trust credit cards to pay for his luxury vacations to Cabo and Saint-Tropez under the guise of "estate management expenses."

They hadn't just treated me like a servant at Sunday dinners. They had been robbing my father's legacy blind while treating me like a charity case.

Suddenly, my desk phone buzzed. It was the building's ground-floor security guard.

"Miss Vane, there are three individuals in the main lobby demanding to see you. A Mrs. Evelyn Vane, a Mr. Justin Vane, and a Mr. Howard Vane. They are being extremely vocal with the front desk staff."

I leaned back in my leather chair, looking out at the city skyline.

"Are they causing a disturbance, Arthur?" I asked smoothly.

"They're shouting that you're stealing their money, ma'am. Mr. Howard Vane attempted to push past the turnstiles."

"Call the police," I said without a second's hesitation. "Have them removed for criminal trespass and issue formal banning orders for the building."

"Understood, Miss Vane."

Five minutes later, Noah sent me a video file.

I opened it on my phone. The video showed my mother, wearing her trademark pearl necklace and designer trench coat, being escorted out of the sparkling marble lobby of Vane-Vanguard Tower by two uniformed police officers. Justin was screaming at the security guards, his face beet-red, while Uncle Howard was being handcuffed near the glass revolving doors for resisting arrest.

They had spent years making me feel small, quiet, and invisible.

Now, the entire financial district was watching them get dragged off the stage.
