Chapter 7 - Caught in the Web

Margaret was standing by the kitchen island, her black trash bag full of evidence in one hand, when the door to the hallway opened.

She didn't expect to see me. And she certainly didn't expect to see Claire, standing tall, healthy, and entirely conscious, right behind me.

Margaret’s phone slipped from her hand, hitting the linoleum floor with a sharp clatter. On the screen, Ben’s voice was still calling out, “Mom? Mom, what’s going on?”

Margaret’s face turned an ashy, bruised purple. She took a step back, her hand flying to her chest, but this time, the gesture looked hollow, almost pathetic.

“Claire,” Margaret whispered, her voice cracking. “You’re... you’re awake.”

“I was never asleep, Margaret,” Claire said, stepping into the kitchen. Her voice was like ice, cutting through the warm air of the house. “And I was never poisoned. Because my son smelled your gout medicine before I could take a bite.”

Margaret’s eyes darted toward the black trash bag in her hand. She tried to slide it behind her back, but I stepped forward, grabbing her wrist with a firm, unyielding grip.

“Let go of me, Arthur!” Margaret shrieked, her old, arrogant authority returning. “You are assaulting your own mother! I will have you arrested!”

“No, Margaret,” I said, looking her in the eyes with a cold, absolute clarity. “We are the ones who are having you arrested.”

Marcus Vance stepped into the kitchen from the back door, holding his phone. “The police are already on their way, Margaret. And I’ve already sent the forensic lab report of the Colchicine-laced steak to the District Attorney.”

“This is a conspiracy!” Margaret screamed, her voice rising to a hysterical pitch. She looked at me, her eyes wild with fury. “She poisoned herself! Claire put that drug on the steak to frame me! She wanted my money! She wanted to destroy this family!”

“We have you on camera, Mom,” I said, pointing to the tiny lens hidden above the sink. “We have you on camera destroying the evidence. We have your confession on tape, asking Ben to steal the audit files to cover up your embezzlement.”

At that moment, the front door opened.

My brother Ben walked into the kitchen, his face pale, his eyes wide as he looked at the scene before him—his mother caught with a bag of evidence, his brother looking at him with deep sorrow, and Claire, alive and well.

“Mom,” Ben said, his voice trembling. “What did you do?”

“Ben, don’t believe them!” Margaret cried, reaching out to her golden son. “They’re trying to ruin me! They’re trying to take everything we have!”

Ben looked at the black trash bag. He looked at the cameras. Then, he looked at me.

“Arthur,” Ben whispered. “Is it true?”

“She tried to kill Claire, Ben,” I said quietly. “And she was going to let Tyler eat that steak to save her own skin. If Claire hadn't screamed, your son would be dead right now.”

Ben’s face went completely blank. He looked at his mother as if seeing her for the very first time. The mask of the loving, protective matriarch had fallen away, leaving behind nothing but a cold, desperate monster.

“Ben...” Margaret pleaded, her voice cracking.

But Ben took a step back, his hands falling to his sides. “Don’t touch me, Mom.”

The sound of distant police sirens began to echo through the quiet suburban streets, growing louder and closer with every passing second.
