Chapter 9 - The Healing Garden

Summer arrived in full brilliance, painting the city in vibrant shades of green and gold.
In the backyard of our house, I had hired landscaping contractors to rip out the old, overgrown rosebushes my parents had insisted on planting and replace them with a sunlit patio, a brand-new wooden swing set for Eli, and a lush garden filled with bright hydrangeas and blooming lavender.
It was a Saturday morning, warm and fragrant with the scent of fresh-cut grass.
Eli was outside on the lawn, chasing a friendly golden retriever belonging to our next-door neighbors—a kind retired couple who had brought us a welcome basket of homemade muffins on our first week back. His laughter bubbled up into the clear blue sky, free, unburdened, and entirely joyful.
I sat on the patio lounge chair, sipping iced coffee and sketching architectural designs for a new company project on my tablet.
My phone chimed on the small glass table beside me.
It was a message from David Sterling, my attorney: “Sentencing hearing concluded. Ryan received twelve years without the possibility of parole. Your parents have officially relocated out of state. The files are closed, Hannah. You are entirely free.”
I stared at the screen for a long moment, reading the words over and over again until they settled deep into my bones.
Free.
No more walking on eggshells. No more apologizing for existing. No more carrying the crushing weight of a family that demanded my soul as payment for their comfort.
Footsteps padded softly across the wooden deck, and a small, warm hand tapped my knee.
"Mommy? Can we go get ice cream now? We finished planting the tomato seeds!"
I looked up into Eli’s bright, healthy face. The bruise along his jaw had vanished months ago, replaced by the glowing, carefree skin of a happy nine-year-old boy who knew, without a single shadow of a doubt, that his mother would walk through fire to keep him safe.
I smiled, locking my tablet and tossing it onto the table.

"Ice cream? Absolutely. Double scoops for both of us."
Eli cheered, grabbing my hand and pulling me toward the sunshine. As we walked out across our lawn together, the last lingering ghosts of my past finally dissolved into the summer air, leaving behind a future that belonged entirely to us.
