Chapter 4 - THE PRISON VISIT

The visiting room of the County Jail was cold, sterile, and smelled faintly of industrial disinfectant and stale floor wax.

I sat behind the thick glass partition, resting my broken arm comfortably on the steel ledge. Across from me, the heavy metal door clicked open, and a corrections officer led Ethan inside.

He looked terrible.

The tailored designer suit he had worn at dinner was gone, replaced by a dingy, oversized orange jumpsuit. His dark hair was messy, his jaw covered in a rough two-day stubble, and his wrists were bound by steel handcuffs connected to a chain around his waist.

When he sat down on the metal stool across from me, his eyes burned with a mixture of intense humiliation and boiling rage. He picked up the heavy plastic telephone receiver with trembling hands.

I picked up my phone with my left hand and held it to my ear.

"Are you happy now?" Ethan spat into the receiver, his voice buzzing with static through the glass. "You ruined my family. Natalie’s store was cleared out by your lawyers this morning. My mother is staying in a cheap motel on the highway because her credit cards were declined! Is this what you wanted, Eleanor?!"

"You forgot your manners, Ethan," I said smoothly. "You didn't ask how my arm is doing."

Ethan slammed his handcuffed fists against the ledge, making the glass rattle. The guard standing by the door instantly laid a stern hand on his nightstick.

"Control yourself, Vance," the guard warned sharpely.

Ethan swallowed hard, leaning close to the glass, his breath fogging the surface. "You think you're so smart, don't you? You think because you have your father's money and your high-priced lawyers that you've won? My criminal defense lawyer says the assault charge won't stick! It's your word against mine! I'll tell the jury you fell! I'll tell them you were drunk!"

I leaned forward, looking at him through the clear glass.

"Did your lawyer tell you about the audio recording from dinner, Ethan?" I asked softly. "The one where your mother explicitly admitted that you broke my arm to 'teach me a lesson'?"

Ethan's eyes widened slightly, a sudden twitch appearing near his left eyelid.

"And did he tell you about the corporate audit?" I continued, letting every word drop like cold lead. "We found the Delaware shell company. We found the seventy-two unauthorized wire transfers you made from my trust accounts over the last two years. We found the offshore account in the Cayman Islands where you deposited three hundred thousand dollars of my father's dividend payouts."

Ethan’s face went completely grey. The confidence he had been clinging to shattered into a million sharp fragments.

"That... that money was mine," he stammered, his voice dropping into a panicked whisper. "We were married! What's yours is mine!"

"Not according to the prenuptial agreement you signed," I reminded him. "Paragraph 14, Clause B: 'Any intentional, fraudulent conversion of non-marital trust assets by either party shall constitute a complete forfeiture of all marital claims, spousal support, and legal fee reimbursements.'"

I smiled—the same quiet, terrifying smile I had given him at the dining table on Thursday night.

"You aren't just going to prison for domestic battery, Ethan," I whispered into the phone. "You are going to federal prison for wire fraud, money laundering, and grand larceny. The District Attorney is filing the formal indictment at two o'clock today."

Ethan dropped his head onto the steel ledge, his shoulders shaking as a desperate, pathetic sob ripped from his throat.

"Eleanor... please..." he begged, his voice muffled against the metal. "I love you. You know I love you! I was just... I felt so small living in your father's shadow! Every time people looked at me, they saw a man living off his rich wife! I wanted something of my own! I wanted to show my family I could be the provider!"

I listened to his excuses—the classic, predictable rhetoric of a weak man who blamed the world for his own dynamic inadequacy.

"You didn't want to be a provider, Ethan," I said, my voice cold and unwavering. "You wanted to be a master. You wanted to sit in my house, eat my food, spend my money, and break my bones whenever I reminded you who built the floor you were standing on."

I slowly lowered the plastic receiver.

Ethan looked up, his eyes bloodshot, reaching out with his bound hands as if he could reach through the bulletproof glass to touch me.

"Eleanor! Don't leave me! Please! Eleanor!"

I didn't answer. I hung up the phone, placed it neatly back on its hook, stood up from my chair, and walked out of the room without looking back once.
