Chapter 6 - The Audit of Truth

The HR conference room was cold and sterile. Helen sat opposite me, alongside the company’s chief legal counsel, a sharp-eyed woman named Sarah.
"Clara, we value your work here," Helen began, her tone cautious. "But the public outcry is growing. There are petitions online calling for your termination. We cannot have our senior staff associated with claims of elder abuse and homelessness."
"I understand, Helen," I said, opening my laptop and turning it so they could see the screen. "But before we make any decisions, I want to show you the reality of the situation."
I opened a secure folder containing a series of digitized documents, bank statements, and video files.
"Fourteen months ago, my father’s company went bankrupt due to his own systemic embezzlement and tax fraud," I explained, clicking open a copy of the federal bankruptcy filing. "I took them in to keep them out of foreclosure. Here are the monthly statements from my bank account, showing that I have paid over eighty thousand dollars in their credit card debts, medical bills, and personal leases over the last year."
I clicked on the next file—a folder of surveillance footage from my home's security system.
"This is the footage from Sunday night," I said, playing the video of the dining room.
The high-definition camera captured every detail: my father slamming his hand on the table, screaming in my face that Lily and I were "freeloaders," while my mother smirked and drank my wine. It showed Lily trembling, weeping, and my father continuing to loom over her, his posture aggressive and threatening.
Sarah, the legal counsel, leaned forward, her eyes locked on the screen. "Is that... is he screaming at a six-year-old child?"
"Yes," I said quietly. "And here is the signed occupancy agreement from when they moved in, explicitly stating that they were temporary, gratuitous guests and had no legal tenancy rights. My attorney, Marcus, secured an emergency court order for their removal based on this exact footage, citing harassment and child endangerment."
The room was dead silent for a long moment. Helen looked at the documents, then at the video, and finally back to me, her face pale with shock.
"My God, Clara," Helen whispered. "I am so sorry. This is... this is horrific."
"They are trying to destroy my career because I finally stopped funding their lifestyle," I said, my voice resolute. "I am not going to let them. I am filing a formal defamation lawsuit against Beatrice and Arthur Sterling today. And I expect Apex to stand by me."

Sarah stood up, a fierce, protective expression on her face. "We absolutely will, Clara. In fact, our PR team is going to issue a statement immediately, confirming that the allegations are entirely false and that the company fully supports you. We will also provide our legal resources to help you fast-track that injunction."
I smiled, a genuine, warm feeling of relief washing over me. The truth was an armor that no amount of social media poison could pierce.
