Chapter 6 - The Freezing of Assets

The following week, the federal courts executed a total, unyielding asset freeze on every entity associated with Richard and Eleanor Vance. It was a financial execution of maximum severity—a liquidation protocol that I had personally designed in collaboration with the SEC task force.

I stood in the driveway of the Lake Forest mansion—the house that had once been the symbol of my parents' unearned victory over my childhood. A large, yellow moving truck was parked outside, its ramp lowered onto the pristine asphalt while federal asset recovery specialists carried out the contents of the estate.

Expensive oil paintings, crystal chandeliers, designer furniture, and racks of Eleanor’s furs were systematically cataloged, wrapped in plastic, and loaded into the cargo bay to be sold at public auction for victim restitution.

Owen stood beside me, his hands stuffed into his pockets, watching the destruction of the only world he had ever known. "It feels surreal," he muttered, his voice cracking slightly. "I remember when they bought that piano. My mother threw a three-day party just to show it off to the neighbors. Now it’s just... an asset code on a federal ledger."

"A ledger that should have included my name fifteen years ago, Owen," I said, not unkindly.

"I know," Owen nodded, looking at me with a deep, quiet respect. "I talked to the prosecutor this morning, Cassandra. The state is going to use the recovery from the offshore accounts to fully reimburse the contractors Richard defrauded. But... there's an issue with the remaining capital. Because the Arthur Pendelton trust was siphoned so long ago, the statute of limitations for civil recovery has expired. You can't legally get your inheritance back from the state."

I let out a soft, cold laugh, looking up at the grand facade of the mansion. "I don't need the state to give me my money back, Owen. I own the firm that mapped the assets. Under federal recovery guidelines, my company is entitled to a fifteen percent finder's fee for locating the hidden offshore accounts."

Owen blinked, his jaw dropping slightly as he calculated the figures in his head. "Fifteen percent of the four million you found in the Caymans... that’s..."

"Six hundred thousand dollars," I said, a genuine smile finally touching my lips. "Exactly double what my biological father left me, adjusted for inflation and fifteen years of interest. Richard and Eleanor thought they could rob my past to pay for your present, but in the end, they just acted as an involuntary investment portfolio for my future."

A sleek black sedan pulled up behind the moving truck, and Elena Ruiz stepped out, holding a manila envelope. She walked up to us, her face bright with a professional triumph that had been fifteen years in the making.

"It’s official, Cassandra," Elena said, handing me the document. "The federal judge just signed the final order. The Vance name has been legally removed from all holding trusts, and the corporate charter for Vance Global Logistical has been permanently revoked. Richard and Eleanor have been denied bail on their criminal indictments. Their trial is set for January."

I took the paper, my fingers tracing the raised state seal at the bottom. The corporate entity that had defined my family's arrogance was dead.

"What about Eleanor?" Owen asked, his voice quiet.

"She’s currently housed at the Metropolitan Correctional Center downtown," Elena said, her tone softening slightly as she looked at the young man. "She’s stopped talking to her lawyers. She just sits in her cell and counts the tiles on the wall. Her public defender is trying to put together a mental competency plea, but given her academic background and the forensic trail Cassandra uncovered, the judge isn't buying it."

I looked out at the lake in the distance, the water gray and choppy beneath the winter sky. The house was empty, the parents were in chains, and the golden child was standing by my side in the cold light of reality. The fortress I had built was no longer just a place to hide; it had become a launchpad for a life that was entirely my own.
