Chapter 10 - The Easter of Restoration

One year after the Easter that shattered our world, spring returned in all its quiet glory.
Easter morning arrived with crisp, blue skies and the sweet fragrance of blooming lilac bushes surrounding our coastal farmhouse.
The dining room table was spread with a yellow floral tablecloth, pastel eggs, and fresh spring flowers. The smell of glazed ham and fresh coffee drifted through the sunny house.
My mother and Marianne worked side-by-side in the kitchen, laughing together as they pulled fresh rolls from the oven. There was no tension. No lingering shadows. Only the easy, warm rhythm of two women who had found true mutual respect and love.
Out on the green lawn, my father was kneeling in the grass, helping Ethan and Lily hide colorful Easter eggs near the garden fence, his laughter ringing out clearly across the yard.
I stood on the back porch, holding two warm mugs of coffee, watching the scene before me.
Marianne stepped out onto the porch, slipping her arm around my waist, resting her head against my shoulder.
"What are you thinking about, Ryan?" she asked softly, looking out at our children playing in the sunlight.
"I was thinking about how close we came to letting cruelty win," I answered gently, handing her one of the coffee mugs. "And how grateful I am that we walked out that door."
Marianne looked up at me, her eyes clear, bright, and brimming with complete, unshakeable peace.
"We didn't just walk out, Ryan," she smiled, leaning up to kiss my cheek. "We walked home."
Down on the lawn, Ethan found a golden egg hidden beneath the lilac bush. He picked it up, holding it high over his head, shouting joyfully toward the porch: "Mom! Dad! Look what I found!"
Lily ran over, wrapping her little arms around her brother’s waist, both of them laughing under the warm spring sun.
There were no envelopes filled with stolen money.

There were no lists of who belonged and who did not.
There was only a family—bound not by paper, fear, or blood alone, but by an unyielding promise of love that no cruelty could ever break again.
