Chapter 10 - The Golden Horizon

Summer returned to the city.

On a warm afternoon in late July—exactly one year since the fateful barbecue—we gathered on the sun-drenched deck of a private sailboat gliding peacefully across the calm blue waters of the Hudson River.

The sky above was a brilliant, cloudless canopy of sapphire blue. The city skyline stood tall and magnificent in the distance, its glass towers catching the golden rays of the setting sun.

Lily was running back and forth along the polished wooden deck, wearing a bright orange life vest, her dark curls bouncing in the warm river breeze. David was right behind her, pretending to be a sea monster, chasing her until she collapsed into giggles near the bow of the boat.

My father sat in a comfortable deck chair, wearing a casual white linen shirt, holding a glass of iced tea, watching the scene with a peaceful, contented smile.

I walked to the wooden railing, leaning against the smooth varnish, taking a deep breath of the fresh, salty air.

David walked up beside me, handing me a glass of sparkling water.

"A penny for your thoughts?" he asked softly, resting his arm against the railing beside mine.

I looked out at the water, watching the golden light dance across the gentle ripples of the river.

"One year ago today," I murmured softly, "I was walking out of an iron gate, holding my burned, crying daughter in my arms, believing that my world had completely ended."

David turned to look at me, his eyes filled with a quiet, everlasting warmth. "And today?"

I looked back at Lily, who had just managed to tackle my father's legs, placing a giant sea-shell sticker right onto his forehead while Charles laughed out loud—a sound I had rarely heard during my childhood.

I smiled, feeling the sun's gentle warmth resting against my face, filling every corner of my heart with an absolute, unshakeable peace.

"Today," I whispered, reaching out to take David's hand, "our life is finally beginning."

The boat glided smoothly forward over the golden water, leaving the shadows of the shore far behind, sailing straight toward a bright, endless horizon where no storm could ever reach us again.
