Chapter 6 - The Broken Glass

The sound of David’s voice—raw, gravelly, and brimming with unfiltered violence—sent a shockwave through the corridor.

Samuel took a involuntary step back from the glass window. His face, previously filled with cool, arrogant confidence, flickered with a sudden, deep-seated fear. He had spent fifteen years watching David eliminate rivals, clear out corrupt police chiefs, and crush rebellions within the family. He knew better than anyone what David Carter was capable of when provoked.

Inside the room, Dr. Winters and two nurses rushed toward David, trying to grab his arms and force him back onto the bed.

"Mr. Carter, stop!" Dr. Winters yelled, her hands pressing against his shoulder. "Your internal sutures will burst! You’re bleeding!"

David didn't even look at her. With a single, explosive shove, he threw off the two medical technicians, grabbing the heavy metal frame of the bedside cardiac monitor.

He swung it with all his remaining strength straight into the center of the observation window!

CRACK!

The heavy, bullet-resistant glass spiderwebbed into a thousand silver fractures!

"Julian!" David roared through the cracked glass, blood dripping down his forearm from his torn IV line. "Get... them... out!"

Julian didn't hesitate for a single second.

The moment David gave the command, Julian’s training took over. He pulled his tactical Glock from his shoulder holster, slamming the butt of the heavy pistol straight into the jaw of Samuel's nearest guard!

The guard collapsed onto the carpeted runner with a heavy thud.

The second guard reached for his weapon, but Julian fired two swift, non-lethal rounds directly into the man’s thigh. The guard screamed, dropping to his knees as blood bloomed across his trousers.

"Natasha! Run!" Julian screamed, grabbing my arm and pulling me down the corridor toward the heavy steel fire exit stairs at the back of the wing.

"Grab them!" Samuel shrieked, scrambling behind a medicine cart as he aimed his silver revolver at Julian. "Don't let them reach the stairs!"

I didn't look back.

I squeezed Chloe against my chest, her small arms wrapped like iron bands around my neck, her tears soaking through my shirt. I sprinted down the hallway, my boots skidding against the polished floor tiles as bullets shattered the ceiling plaster overhead!

Julian pushed open the heavy red emergency door, shoving me inside the concrete stairwell.

"Go down to the basement!" Julian yelled, his back pressed against the heavy door as he fired three warning shots back into the corridor to keep Samuel’s remaining men at bay. "My car is parked in bay four near the linen loading dock! The keys are in the ignition! Drive straight to the safehouse in Oak Park!"

"What about David?!" I cried out, my voice echoing up the echoing concrete stairwell.

"David will survive!" Julian yelled back, a dark, fierce smile breaking across his blood-spattered face. "He’s too mean to die today! Now GO!"

He slammed the steel door shut and locked it from the inside, leaving me alone in the dim, cold stairwell with my daughter.

I didn't waste another second.

I took the concrete stairs three at a time, holding Chloe so tight I could feel her small heart hammering against my chest like a trapped bird. Down, down, down—past the fourth floor, the third, the second—until we hit the cold, damp air of the sub-basement loading bay.
