Chapter 4 - WHISPERS IN THE ER

The public hospital was no longer a refuge for Elena.

When she walked through the double sliding doors of the Emergency Department for her night shift on Thursday, the usual chaotic noise of alarms, footsteps, and shouted orders seemed to freeze for a fraction of a second. Doctors stopped dictating notes at the central station. Nurses paused while filling medication carts.

The whispers began almost instantly.

"Is that her?"

"I heard she’s getting half a billion dollars..."

"Must be nice. Meanwhile, the rest of us are working double shifts for seventy grand a year."

Elena kept her chin up, looking straight ahead as she walked to her locker. Her locker door was plastered with a neon yellow sticky note: “Management needs to see you in Office 3.”

Ten minutes later, she sat across from Dr. Arthur Vance, the Chief of Medicine—a man she had respected for six years.

"Elena," Dr. Vance began, tapping his pen against a manila folder. "The board of directors is extremely concerned. We have news crews camped outside our ambulance bay. Patients are complaining about the media circus. And now, we’ve received formal legal notices from Blackwell Enterprises' corporate attorneys requesting medical verification files regarding your daughters' transplant procedures."

Elena’s knuckles turned white against her knees. "Those records are protected by HIPAA, Dr. Vance. You cannot release them."

"We haven't," Dr. Vance sighed, leaning back. "But the publicity is disrupting hospital operations. And frankly, Elena... the rumors are damaging. If you are accepting hundreds of millions of dollars from a major donor, it creates a massive conflict of interest with your employment here."

"I haven't accepted a single penny for myself!" Elena said hotly. "Mr. Blackwell created an independent charitable trust for pediatric transplant patients! I am merely overseeing the operational distribution so families don't go bankrupt trying to save their kids!"

"Be that as it may," Dr. Vance said coldly, "I am placing you on administrative leave without pay until this legal controversy with the Blackwell family is resolved."

Elena felt as though the floor under her chair had opened up. Suspended. Without pay.

She walked out of the hospital twenty minutes later through the side exit, her scrub top hidden beneath an old corduroy jacket. The rain was drizzling again. As she reached the parking lot, she saw a photographer crouching behind her beat-up 2012 sedan, holding up a camera with a massive telephoto lens.

"Elena! Over here!" the photographer yelled, stepping out into her path. "Is it true you were Matthew Blackwell’s secret fiancé before his crash? Did you use the kids to get to the Blackwell fortune?"

"Get away from me!" Elena shouted, trying to unlock her car door with shaking hands.

"Just give us a statement! Is Sophia really Matthew’s child?"

The photographer grabbed her shoulder to turn her toward the lens.

Before Elena could scream, a heavy black-gloved hand gripped the photographer’s wrist with crushing force, yanking him back three feet.

"Touch her again," a deep, icy voice growled, "and you will spend the next ten years in a federal prison for assault and corporate harassment."

Elena looked up, gasping. Gerald Blackwell stood in the rain beside her, flanked by four tall men in tailored suits.
