Chapter 8 - The Legal Reckoning

By late August, the legal proceedings against Clara Sterling reached their inevitable conclusion.

Faced with overwhelming physical evidence—including the ledger Ethan recovered, bank routing logs, fingerprint matches from her previous federal warrants, and testimonies from two previous victims who had come forward after seeing her face on the news—Clara’s public defender advised her to take a plea deal.

On a humid Tuesday morning, David sat in the federal courtroom once again, this time to deliver a victim impact statement before sentencing.

Clara stood before the federal judge in her orange jumpsuit, her hair unstyled, looking every bit of the aging con artist she truly was. The judge asked if she had anything to say before sentencing was handed down.

Clara turned around, fixing her eyes on David in the gallery. Her voice was laced with bitter venom.

“I gave him what he wanted,” Clara told the judge, gesturing wildly toward David. “He was a miserable widower sitting in a dark house feeling sorry for himself. I gave him a family. I gave him companionship. If it weren't for a jealous, meddling kid who didn't know his place, we would have lived happily ever after.”

The courtroom murmured in shock at her complete lack of remorse.

The federal judge, a stern woman with decades on the bench, banged her gavel twice.

“Ms. Sterling,” the judge said, her voice dripping with absolute authority. “Your lack of remorse is astounding, though entirely unsurprising given your criminal history of preying on vulnerable families. You exploited a grieving father and manipulated an eight-year-old child through psychological intimidation and fear. Society needs protection from predators like you.”

The judge paused, looking down at the sentencing guidelines.

“For federal wire fraud, identity theft, and interstate financial conspiracy, this court sentences you to twelve years in a federal correctional facility with no possibility of parole for the first eight years.”

Bang.

The gavel fell.

Clara let out a sharp gasp, lunging forward before two federal marshals grabbed her arms and dragged her out of the courtroom.

As she passed David’s row, she hissed, “You haven't heard the last of me, Matthews!”

David didn't blink. He didn't flinch. He simply watched her disappear through the double doors, knowing full well that she would spend the next twelve years behind thick glass and steel bars, far away from any family she could ever hope to exploit.
