Chapter 1 - The Triplets of Shadows

The metallic click of Private Investigator Julian Vance’s biometric safe echoed in the dim basement office like a gunshot. Vance stood against the cold concrete wall, sweating profusely, his hands trembling as he stared at the heavy black iron barrel of my firearm resting on his desk.
"I was just hired to do a job, Rowan," Vance stammered, his voice cracking under the oppressive silence of the room. "I didn't know how far they were going to take it. You have to believe me—I’m just a middleman!"
I ignored his pleas. My gloved fingers lifted the heavy leather-bound folder from the depths of the steel safe. Beneath the falsified photo logs of Maren walking into high-end hotels with an unknown man, beneath the fabricated bank statements showing offshore transfers, lay a thick yellowed envelope stamped with a confidential medical seal from St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital.
My hands shook violently as I pulled out the original ultrasound scans and a hidden delivery room registry from fourteen months prior.
My breath caught in my throat. My vision blurred. Triplets.
Two babies were strapped to Maren’s chest on that dusty gravel road—a boy and a girl with my distinct blond hair and ice-blue eyes. But there was a third child. A second boy.
I flipped the page. Glued to the back was a handwritten ledger with payments totalizing over two million dollars, wired directly from an offshore shell corporation registered in the Cayman Islands. At the bottom of the ledger was a single handwritten note written in precise, elegant calligraphy—a handwriting I had seen on hundreds of love letters over the past six months:
"Take the third child. Keep the mother destitute. If Rowan ever discovers the truth, destroy the remaining evidence and ensure Maren disappears permanently. — T.W."
T.W. Tessa Whitmore.
The room seemed to spin. Every breath I took felt like inhaling broken glass. One year ago, Tessa had walked into my life precisely when the "evidence" against Maren began to surface. She was there to comfort me when I threw Maren out into the freezing rain with nothing but a single suitcase. She was there when I signed the expedited divorce papers. She was there to push her father’s private equity firm into merging with my tech conglomerate, slowly wrapping her golden silk threads around every aspect of my existence.
And all the while, she had stolen my wife’s third child, forced Maren into abject poverty, and staged a masterpiece of deception.
I grabbed Vance by his collar, dragging him across the desk until his pale face was inches from mine. "Where is the third baby?" I roared, the rage burning through my veins like fire. "Where is my son?"
"I don’t know! I swear on my life, I don't know!" Vance cried out, tears spilling down his cheeks. "Tessa took the third baby straight from the clinic before Maren even woke up from the anesthesia! They told Maren the third baby was stillborn! Maren doesn't even know she had triplets! She thinks she only gave birth to twins!"
A cold horror settled in my stomach. Maren didn't even know. She was wandering the back roads of the county, collecting aluminum cans to feed two babies, grieving a third child she believed had died at birth—while the woman sleeping in my bed held the master key to our destruction.
"You're coming with me," I growled, shoving Vance toward the door. "You’re going to help me tear Tessa Whitmore’s world apart piece by piece. And if you make a single sound, I will ensure you spend the rest of your life buried under the state penitentiary."

I walked out into the cool night air, the heavy folder locked securely under my arm. As I stepped into my SUV, I looked at the passenger seat where Tessa had sat only hours ago, throwing a twenty-dollar bill into the dirt at the mother of my children.
The hunt had just begun.
