Chapter 5 - The Unraveling

The room went deathly silent as high-resolution documents filled the massive screens.

First came the audio recording from Vance’s office—Tessa’s cold, crisp voice authorizing the two-million-dollar bribe to falsify Maren’s medical records, detailed instructions on how to simulate a stillbirth, and explicit directions to transport Clara to Julian’s private medical wing in Zurich.

Next came the bank transfers, meticulously traced through offshore accounts in the Cayman Islands, showing direct payments from Julian Whitmore’s personal charitable foundation to the doctors who took my daughter.

Finally, the screen displayed the arresting officer's mugshots of Tessa Whitmore, taken just four hours ago at the county booking facility. Charges: First-degree kidnapping, conspiracy, and extortion.

Gasps echoed around the table. Two of the board members stood up in shock, staring at the screens in utter disbelief.

"My God..." Arthur Pendelton whispered, looking at Julian with horrifying realization. "Julian... is this true? You tried to harvest Rowan's infant child?"

Julian’s face had gone from pale to a dangerous, mottled purple. His knuckles turned white as he gripped the armrests of his chair, his breathing turning ragged as the oxygen concentrator whined louder.

"This is... a fabricated smear campaign!" Harrison Vance, Julian's lawyer, yelled, jumping to his feet. "These documents are doctored! My client is a respected philanthropist—"

"Your brother, Vance, signed a sworn confession two hours ago," I interrupted, stepping closer to the table. "He gave up the encryption keys to your private servers. Right now, federal agents are raiding Whitmore Enterprises' headquarters down the street. The SEC has already issued a halt on Whitmore Capital trading."

Julian let out a wet, gasping cough. He glared at me with an intensity of pure hatred that could have withered steel. "You... you ungrateful bastard..." he wheezed, trembling as he pointed a liver-spotted finger at me. "I built you... I gave you access to global power... and you destroy everything... for a common girl and her bastard spawn?"

"They are my family, Julian," I said, my voice dead calm, cold, and final. "And you made the fatal mistake of underestimating what a father will do to protect his children."

I turned to the board. "The motion before the board is no longer my termination. The motion before the board is the immediate severance of all ties with Whitmore Enterprises, the cancellation of all shared stock agreements, and the voting of full corporate legal backing for the prosecution of Julian and Tessa Whitmore."

Arthur Pendelton looked around the room. Every single board member raised their hand in unanimous agreement.

"The motion carries," Arthur said, his voice trembling with disgust as he looked at Julian. "Security, please escort Mr. Whitmore and his counsel off the premises. Federal marshals are waiting in the lobby."

Two corporate security guards stepped forward. Julian Whitmore, the titan of industry who had tried to buy his life with the blood of my baby, was pulled from his chair, clutching his chest, coughing violently as he was led away in shame and defeat.

The room cleared out rapidly as board members rushed to handle the immense media fallout. I stood alone in the center of the massive room, looking out through the floor-to-ceiling windows at the city skyline below.

I had won the corporate war. I had destroyed the enemies who tried to tear my life apart.

But as I looked at my reflection in the glass, wearing a three-thousand-dollar suit in a skyscraper pent-house, I felt no triumph. I felt only a hollow, aching void.

Winning in the boardroom was easy. The real battle—the impossible battle—was waiting for me back in the pine forest, in the eyes of the woman I had broken, betrayed, and left to die in the dust.

My phone chimed. It was a text message from Maren.

Come back. Leo has a high fever. He's asking for his father.

May you like

My heart stopped. The word father hit me like a physical blow.

I didn't call for my driver. I grabbed my coat, ran to the elevator, and raced back toward the safehouse.
