Chapter 10 - The Bench in the Garden

One year later. Spring on Tybee Island.

The garden behind our cottage was in full bloom. Pink azaleas, white gardenias, and deep purple hydrangeas lined the wooden fence, filling the warm afternoon air with a rich, sweet fragrance.

In the center of the lawn stood a broad, hand-carved stone bench that Frank Reynolds and I had built together out of Georgia granite.

Engineered onto the stone backrest were four simple words:

ORDER IS JUSTICE. LOVE IS MERCY.

I sat on the stone bench, wearing a comfortable cardigan and reading a history book, watching five-year-old Lily playing on a wooden swing set that swung back and forth under the shade of a massive live oak tree.

Behind her, Caroline sat on a lawn chair with a sketchbook in her lap, drawing charcoal portraits of Lily laughing in the sunshine.

Her health was perfect. Her foundation had already secured funding for fifty pediatric art therapy programs across the state, and her story had inspired hundreds of families fighting similar legal and medical battles.

Margaret walked out from the kitchen, holding a tray with two fresh tall glasses of iced lemonade. She set one down beside me on the stone bench and sat down at my side, resting her hand comfortably in mine.

"You're quiet today, Daniel," Margaret said softly, looking at me over her sunglasses.

"I was just thinking," I said, taking a sip of the sweet lemonade, "about how close I came to missing all of this."

"You didn't miss it, Daniel," Margaret said, leaning over to kiss my cheek. "You answered the call."

Just then, Lily jumped off the swing set, her small red sneakers hitting the grass with a soft thud, and ran across the lawn toward us, her hair flying in the sea wind.

She carried a small wooden gavel that Frank Reynolds had carved for her fifth birthday, polished to a high shine.

She stopped right in front of my knees, held the small gavel high in the air, and struck it down against the granite bench with a loud, sharp CLACK!

"Court is in session!" Lily yelled, her little face beaming with pure, unbridled joy.

I pulled her up onto my lap, holding her close against my chest, feeling her soft laughter reverberate against my ribs as Caroline and Margaret laughed beside us under the warm Georgia sun.

"No, my sweet girl," I whispered, kissing her forehead as the ocean breeze carried our laughter out across the waves. "Court is adjourned. Forever."

[THE END]
