Chapter 5 - The Shattered Crown

By noon, the news of Madison Cole’s arrest had sent shockwaves through Chicago’s elite financial and social circles.

Front-page headlines in the Chicago Tribune and The Wall Street Journal detailed the shocking collapse of the Westwood Engagement Gala, the multi-million-dollar embezzlement scheme, and the reopening of the Claire Westwood murder investigation.

Inside the grand parlor of the Westwood mansion, Margaret Westwood sat alone in a high-backed silk armchair.

She looked frail, stripped of the terrifying, rigid authority she had exercised over the family for forty years. Her silver hair was slightly unkempt, her dark eyes staring blankly at the cold fireplace.

The door opened softly.

Adrian walked in, wearing a simple black sweater and trousers.

He didn't sit down. He stood near the entrance, looking at his mother with a profound, quiet sadness.

“The board of the Westwood Foundation held an emergency meeting an hour ago,” Adrian said evenly. “They have removed you as Chairwoman Emeritus.”

Margaret didn't flinch. She took a slow sip from a cold cup of tea.

“I only wanted this family to stay strong, Adrian,” Margaret whispered, her voice rasping with age and exhaustion. “After your father died... after Claire’s crash... everything was falling apart. Madison promised she could stabilize our real estate holdings. She promised she could keep Caleb out of prison.”

“You knew about Caleb’s debts,” Adrian stated, not as a question, but as a conviction.

Margaret looked up at her eldest son, her eyes filled with desperate, defense mechanisms.

“I didn't know she killed Claire!” Margaret pleaded, her hands trembling in her lap. “I swear to you, Adrian! I thought Caleb was just irresponsible! Madison came to me two years ago and said she had covered three million in Caleb’s margin calls! She said she did it because she loved this family! She said she wanted to marry you to protect us from public ruin!”

“She bought your silence with Caleb’s shame,” Adrian said coldly. “And in return, you pushed me to marry the woman who murdered my wife. You called Emma a 'servant’s child' because she dared to threaten the lie you built to protect your reputation.”

Margaret covered her face with her thin, liver-spotted hands, weeping quietly in the silent parlor.

“What are you going to do to me, Adrian?” she wept. “Are you going to send your own mother to prison?”

Adrian stared at her for a long, painful minute.

“No, Mother,” Adrian said softly. “I won't send you to prison. But you are leaving this estate today. The driver will take you to the family home in Naples, Florida. You will receive an allowance from the estate trust, but you will no longer have a vote on the board, a say in this family’s affairs, or a place in this house.”

Margaret raised her head, looking at him with wide, disbelieving eyes. “Exile? You’re exiling your own mother?”

May you like

“You chose reputation over truth, Mom,” Adrian replied, his voice unyielding as stone. “Now you can live with your reputation in Florida, far away from the truth you tried to bury.”

He turned on his heel and walked out of the parlor, shutting the grand double doors behind him forever.
