Chapter 9 - The Tuesday Tradition

One year later.

It was a bright Tuesday afternoon at Northstar Robotics.

The rooftop terrace on the forty-second floor was bustling with life. Over a hundred employees—engineers, software developers, janitors, and executives—sat at long communal tables, eating lunch, laughing, and sharing stories.

The cold, silent isolation that had once defined the rooftop was completely gone.

At the large round table near the purple flower boxes sat Claire.

She was wearing a sleek red blazer, her hair styling elegant, her sapphire ring sparkling in the sunlight. Beside her sat Mason, looking handsome in a tailored suit, reviewing a set of blueprint schematics for a new pediatric exoskeleton.

In the chair between them sat nine-year-old Lucy.

She was holding a small camera, carefully taking photographs of a very fat pigeon perched on the terrace railing.

“Look, Claire!” Lucy shouted proudly, showing the camera screen. “Senator Pickles came back! And he brought a girlfriend!”

Claire looked at the screen, laughing genuinely—a warm, rich sound that echoed across the terrace.

“He certainly looks like a senator,” Claire agreed, touching Lucy’s hair gently.

Arthur stepped up to the table, holding a sleek tablet.

“Ms. Whitmore,” Arthur said smoothly. “The delegation from the World Health Organization has arrived for the afternoon tour of the Orion facility.”

Claire nodded. “Thank you, Arthur. Tell them I’ll be down in ten minutes.”

Arthur smiled—a warm, genuine smile that had become his standard expression over the past year—and bowed slightly before stepping away.

Claire looked out over the rooftop terrace.

She saw employees from different departments sitting together, talking, sharing food, and laughing. She saw a workplace built not on fear or cold competition, but on human connection.

She looked at her husband, who was holding her hand under the table, his thumb tracing soft circles on her palm. She looked at her daughter, who was happily drawing a new picture with a purple crayon.
