Chapter 3: The Man Who Watched From the Shadows

The next morning, the diner was already busy.

But Lou wasn’t there.

Which was unusual.

Lou was always there when money was involved.

Clara worked the breakfast shift alone.

Coffee.

Orders.

Toast burning slightly because she forgot to reset the timer.

At 10:14 AM, the door opened.

The temperature in the room changed.

Not physically.

Socially.

A man walked in.

Not flashy.

Not loud.

But wrong in a place like this.

Too still.

Too aware.

He sat at the counter without looking at the menu.

Clara approached cautiously.

“What can I get you?”

He studied her for a moment.

Then said:

“You gave food to an Italian woman yesterday.”

Clara froze slightly.

“I give food to people every day.”

A pause.

“That one mattered,” he said.

She frowned.

“Why?”

He leaned forward slightly.

“Because she wasn’t supposed to be here.”

Clara stepped back half a step.

“I don’t know what you’re talking about.”

The man nodded.

“I know.”

A pause.

“That’s why I’m here.”

He placed a folded photo on the counter.

Clara didn’t touch it immediately.

She just looked.

The woman from yesterday.

But different.

No coat.

No exhaustion.

Standing next to men in suits.

In front of a building Clara didn’t recognize.

Clara’s voice lowered.

“Who is she?”

The man answered:

“Someone who should have been dead for seven years.”

Silence.

Not dramatic.

Structural.

Clara whispered:

“I fed her soup.”

The man nodded.

“Yes.”

A pause.

“That’s why she’s alive today.”

The diner suddenly felt smaller.

Like the walls had moved inward slightly.

Clara asked:

“Why would that matter?”

The man studied her closely.

“Because people who survive that world don’t stay hidden.”

A pause.

“They spread.”

Then he added something quieter.

“And now they know you exist.”

Clara felt something shift.

Not fear yet.

But direction.

Like gravity changing alignment.

The man stood.

“You didn’t do anything wrong,” he said.

A pause.

“That’s the problem.”

He left without ordering anything.

Without finishing his sentence.

May you like

Without explaining.

And somehow that made it worse.
