Chapter 5: The Docks Showdown

The final trap was sprung at Pier 14.
Marcus Thorne had managed to escape from Julian’s enforcers—a calculated move allowed by Julian and Sophia to trace him back to his ultimate backer. That backer was Don Valetti, the head of the Commission, the man who had orchestrated the entire civil war to seize control of the Blackwood shipping lines.
The night was suffocatingly foggy, the dark waters of Lake Michigan lapping violently against the wooden pilings of the massive warehouse. Over thirty heavily armed Valetti enforcers stood guard outside, unaware that they were already completely surrounded.
Inside the warehouse, Marcus Thorne stood beside an older, heavy-set man with a silver cane—Don Valetti. They were surrounded by crates of illegal weapons and contraband.
"Julian Blackwood is finished," Marcus bragged, limping slightly from his head injury. "We’ve taken three of his primary warehouses. By tomorrow, the board will vote me in as the new head of the family."
"You talk too much, Marcus," a voice echoed from the rafters.
The massive skylight shattered into a million pieces. Sophia Vance dropped down through the darkness, suspended by a tactical harness, her dual suppressed pistols firing before her feet even touched the concrete floor.
Puff. Puff. Puff.
Four Valetti guards collapsed instantly, their weapons clattering against the floor. At the same moment, the heavy steel garage doors of the warehouse were ripped open as Julian’s armored SUV rammed through, wood and metal splintering in every direction.
Julian stepped out of the vehicle, a heavy assault rifle in his hands, his face a mask of absolute, unadulterated fury. "Valetti!" he roared.
The warehouse erupted into a chaotic, violent firefight. Sophia unhooked her harness, rolling behind a stack of shipping crates, her movements a blur of lethal efficiency as she provided flawless cover fire for Julian. She moved like a phantom through the smoke, neutralizing targets with a cold, unshakeable focus.
Julian advanced like a juggernaut, his bullets tearing through the rival syndicate's defenses. Don Valetti, panicked and realizing the tide had turned, scrambled toward a speedboat tied to the dock inside the warehouse, but a precise shot from Sophia tore through his leg, sending him crashing to the floor, his silver cane spinning away.
Marcus Thorne, realizing he was entirely abandoned, grabbed a stray pistol and aimed it directly at Julian’s back as Julian was reloading.
"Julian, look out!" Sophia screamed.
She didn't hesitate. She lunged out from her cover, throwing her body into Marcus just as he fired. The bullet went wide, but Marcus’s heavy fist connected with Sophia’s jaw, sending her crashing against a steel pillar.
"You ruined everything, you little bitch!" Marcus shrieked, raising the gun to her head.
He never got to pull the trigger.
Julian was there in a heartbeat. He grabbed Marcus’s wrist, snapping the bone with a sickening crack. Marcus screamed in agony as the gun dropped from his fingers. Julian didn't stop. He grabbed Marcus by the collar, lifting him completely off his feet, and delivered a devastating punch that shattered Marcus’s jaw. He threw the traitorous second-in-command into the freezing, dark waters of the canal below.
Julian immediately turned, dropping his weapon and kneeling beside Sophia. His hands were shaking as he lifted her head into his lap. "Sophia! Sophia, look at me."
Sophia blinked, her vision clearing as she looked up into his panicked steel eyes. A faint trickle of blood ran from the corner of her mouth, but she managed a weak, triumphant smile.

"Did we... did we win?" she whispered.
Julian let out a ragged, emotional breath, pulling her tight against his chest, his face buried in her hair. "Yes, we won. We took it all back. It's over, Sophia. It's finally over."
