Chapter 5 - The Park Avenue Silence

The entire lobby of the Plaza Hotel went dead silent.
The flashing cameras stopped for one impossible, suspended second. Journalists froze with their notebooks halfway to their chests. Society elite standing near the bar turned around, their champagne glasses frozen at their lips.
“Leave my Mommy alone!”
The words echoed off the gilded ceilings, bouncing off the chandeliers, landing with the impact of a nuclear bomb in the middle of Manhattan society.
Eleanor Sterling stared at the five-year-old girl, her mouth open in absolute, speechless horror. Her aristocratic face flushed a deep, blotchy red.
“What... what did she just call you?” Eleanor gasped, pointing a diamond-encrusted finger at me.
I stood frozen, my heart pounding so hard I could hear it roaring in my ears. I looked down at Vanessa, who was glaring up at Eleanor like a tiny warrior defending her fortress. Abigail immediately stepped up beside her sister, grabbing my other hand and lifting her chin with that same fierce, terrifying pride I had seen on Park Avenue a month ago.
“You heard her,” Abigail said clearly, her small voice echoing across the quiet lobby. “She’s our Mommy now. And you’re mean!”
The press line erupted into absolute, chaotic madness.
Flashing bulbs exploded like a fireworks display. Photographers shoved past the velvet ropes, shouting frantically:
“Julian! Is it true? Are you engaged?” “Miss Hayes! Are you the new Mrs. Vance?” “Mr. Vance! Comment on the engagement!”
Julian didn't hesitate.
He didn't pull back. He didn't deny it. He didn't apologize to Eleanor Sterling, who was standing there hyperventilating as reporters snapped pictures of her humiliation.
Julian stepped forward, wrapped his broad arm securely around my waist, pulling me firmly against his side, and looked directly into the barrage of flashing cameras.
“This interview is over,” Julian announced in a booming, velvet voice that carried total authority.
He turned us around, escorting me and the twins away from the press line, through the grand double doors of the private elevator, leaving the roaring circus of high society behind us.
Inside the quiet glass elevator, as it rumbled upward toward the penthouse suite, the silence was suffocating.
I pulled away from Julian’s grip, stepping back against the mirrored wall, breathing heavily, my chest heaving.
“Vanessa,” I whispered, dropping down to my knees, taking the little girl’s trembling hands in mine. “Sweetheart... why did you say that?”
Vanessa looked at me, her blue eyes wide and innocent, brimming with tears. “She was being mean to you, Miss Victoria. You’re the one who takes care of us. You’re the one who reads us stories and hugs us when it thunders. You’re our Mommy in our hearts.”
I swallowed back a sob, pulling both girls into a tight, desperate hug, burying my face in their hair. I couldn't be angry at her. I couldn't be mad at a child who had given me the highest honor her small world could offer.
Over their heads, I looked up at Julian.
He was standing near the control panel, watching us. He wasn't angry. He wasn't furious.
His gray eyes were soft, burning with an emotion so intense, so fierce, it made my skin tingle. He walked over slowly, dropping down on one knee beside me on the plush carpet of the elevator.
He reached out, his hand gently covering mine where it rested on Vanessa’s shoulder.
“She’s right, you know,” Julian whispered, his voice rough and deep.
I stared at him, stunned. “Julian... the press... Eleanor... your board—"
“Fuck the press,” Julian said, using a swear word I had never heard come out of his refined mouth. “And fuck Eleanor Sterling. Do you think I care what a bunch of shallow aristocrats think about the woman who saved my family?”
“Julian,” I breathed, tears finally spilling over my lashes. “You can't just let the world think we’re... that I’m—”

“I don't want them to think it, Victoria,” Julian said, his thumb gently reaching out to wipe a tear off my cheek, his touch sending electric shocks down my spine. “I want it to be true.”
The elevator hissed as it arrived at the top floor, the doors sliding open to reveal the quiet luxury of the penthouse. But neither of us moved. We stayed on our knees, surrounded by his daughters, locked in a gaze that changed everything forever.
