CHAPTER 6 — THE BOSS’S CHOICE

The call came at dawn.

Not on a phone.

Not through an assistant.

Directly into Vincent Rossi’s secure line.

One sentence only:

“Council convenes at noon. Bring the girl.”

Vincent stared at the message for a long moment.

Then deleted it.

Not because it wasn’t important.

Because it was inevitable.

1. Emma Learns What “Bringing Her” Means

Emma was sitting up now, stronger than before, but still far from healed.

The estate felt different this morning.

Not quieter.

Tighter.

Like the walls themselves had become aware of something approaching.

Vincent entered without knocking.

He didn’t sit.

He looked at her.

“Get dressed,” he said.

Emma frowned.

“Why?”

A pause.

“They want to see you.”

Her stomach tightened instantly.

“…Who is ‘they’?”

Vincent didn’t hesitate.

“The people who decide whether I continue leading this organization.”

Emma stared at him.

“You mean the mafia council.”

Vincent nodded once.

“Yes.”

Emma swallowed.

“And why do they want me there?”

Vincent answered honestly.

“Because you are the only argument left I don’t control.”

That silence lasted longer than the sentence.

2. The Journey Back Into the City

The convoy left the estate under heavy weather.

Black vehicles.

No markings.

No sirens.

Just motion cutting through the forest like a silent warning.

Emma sat in the middle vehicle.

Margaret beside her.

Vincent in the front.

No one spoke much.

Because everyone understood the same thing:

This wasn’t transport.

This was escalation.

Emma watched trees blur past the window.

Her voice was quiet.

“If I die today… is that what this is about?”

Margaret immediately shook her head.

“No.”

A pause.

“This is about who gets to decide what you are to him.”

Emma turned slightly.

“…And what am I to him?”

Margaret hesitated.

Then answered softly.

“I think that’s what they’re afraid of finding out.”

3. The Council Hall

The building was older than the Rossi empire itself.

Stone.

Steel.

History disguised as architecture.

Inside, the council chamber was already full.

Long table.

Cold lighting.

Men and women who didn’t look like criminals—

They looked like executives.

That was always the most dangerous part.

Vincent entered first.

Then Emma.

The room shifted instantly.

Not loudly.

But visibly.

Eyes moved.

Calculations updated.

A variable had entered the system.

One council member leaned forward.

“So this is her.”

Emma felt every gaze like weight.

Vincent spoke before anyone else.

“She is not a topic.”

A pause.

“She is the reason I am here.”

That caused the first ripple of tension.

4. The Trial Begins Without Being Called One

An older council member spoke.

“You brought a civilian into Rossi structure.”

Vincent corrected immediately.

“She is not Rossi structure.”

Another voice:

“Then why is she here?”

Vincent’s answer was simple.

“Because you made her one.”

Silence.

Emma’s pulse quickened.

She whispered to Margaret:

“I don’t understand what’s happening…”

Margaret whispered back:

“You are the argument.”

5. The Council’s Real Goal

The chairman of the council finally spoke.

Calm.

Measured.

Dangerously polite.

“Vincent, your leadership has always been effective.”

A pause.

“But your judgment is now compromised.”

Vincent didn’t react.

The chairman continued.

“You have shifted resources.”

“Exposed internal security.”

“And destabilized external alliances.”

Then he looked directly at Emma.

“All for her.”

Emma felt her throat tighten.

Vincent finally spoke.

“She is not the cause of instability.”

A pause.

“She is the exposure of it.”

That answer didn’t satisfy them.

That was clear immediately.

6. The Vote That Would Decide Everything

A document was placed on the table.

Margaret stiffened.

Emma noticed immediately.

Vincent didn’t move.

The chairman spoke.

“Council vote will determine your continued authority.”

A pause.

“But first, we must resolve the variable.”

Emma whispered:

“…Variable?”

Vincent finally looked at her.

Quietly.

“They want to remove you from the equation.”

Emma’s breath caught.

“…Remove means what?”

Vincent didn’t answer directly.

Because he didn’t need to.

She understood anyway.

7. The Moment Everything Breaks

The council began speaking over each other.

Arguments.

Accusations.

Strategy.

Power.

Then one voice rose above the rest:

“She is irrelevant. End this.”

Another:

“She destabilizes him.”

Another:

“She must be eliminated.”

Emma’s body went cold.

Margaret grabbed her hand tightly.

Vincent remained still.

Watching.

Listening.

Calculating.

Then—

He stood.

The room fell silent instantly.

Because when Vincent Rossi stood in a council room, it was never symbolic.

It was a decision forming.

8. Vincent’s Final Declaration

He spoke calmly.

“You misunderstand something fundamental.”

A pause.

“You believe she is the variable.”

He looked around the room.

“You are wrong.”

Silence sharpened.

Vincent continued:

“She is the test.”

A beat.

“And I have already passed.”

The council chairman narrowed his eyes.

“What are you saying?”

Vincent turned slightly toward Emma.

And then said it.

Loud enough for everyone.

Clear enough to end speculation forever.

“I choose her.”

Silence.

No one moved.

Even Emma froze.

Because that wasn’t protection.

That wasn’t strategy.

That was finality.

9. The Cost of Choosing

The chairman’s voice turned cold.

“Then you forfeit authority.”

Vincent nodded once.

“I understand.”

A pause.

“But I do not negotiate under threats disguised as governance.”

The council reacted instantly.

Chaos rising.

Voices overlapping.

Security shifting.

But Vincent didn’t look at them anymore.

He looked at Emma.

And said quietly:

“This is where I stop being their boss.”

A pause.

“And start being something else entirely.”

Emma whispered:

“…What?”

Vincent answered simply.

“Yours.”

That word changed the air in the room more than any weapon could.

10. Aftermath

The council dissolved into fracture.

Some stood.

Some argued.

Some left immediately.

But the structure was no longer intact.

It had been broken from the inside.

Margaret exhaled slowly.

“Vincent…”

He didn’t look at her.

“I know.”

Emma sat frozen.

“I don’t understand…” she whispered.

Vincent finally knelt beside her.

For the first time since the diner.

Not above her.

Not beside power.

But level.

His voice was quieter now.

“You were never part of the Rossi organization.”

A pause.

“You were the moment I stopped belonging to it.”

Emma’s eyes widened slightly.

“…And now?”

Vincent looked at her.

No calculation left.

Only certainty.

“Now I choose a different life.”

A pause.

“One that doesn’t require permission.”

FINAL SCENE — THE BEGINNING AFTER THE END

Outside the council hall, the city continued moving.

Inside, the empire recalibrated without its center.

And for the first time, Vincent Rossi walked out without being followed.

Emma beside him.

Not owned.

Not controlled.

Not used as leverage.

Just alive.

Margaret watched them leave and whispered:

“About time.”

Emma glanced at Vincent as they stepped into daylight.

“You really gave up everything,” she said softly.

Vincent answered:

“I gave up what was trying to own me.”

A pause.

“And kept what I chose.”

They kept walking.

Not toward power.

Not toward empire.

But toward something far more dangerous in their world.

A future that didn’t have rules written for it yet.

FINAL LINE

And in a city that understood power better than love—

May you like

Vincent Rossi finally proved that sometimes the most dangerous decision a man can make…

is refusing to be controlled by anything except his own choice.
