Chapter 9 - The Final Gambit

By late spring, the compound on Lake St. Clair felt like a true home.
Belle’s doctors delivered incredible news: her cardiac function had stabilized to ninety percent, allowing her to stop the heavy intravenous treatments and live a normal, active childhood. She was running through the estate's green gardens, laughing, playing, and calling me "Mommy" whenever she reached for my hand.
Harlan and I had become inseparable. The cold, feared kingpin of Detroit had surrendered entirely to the quiet, fierce love we shared.
However, the final remnant of Harlan's criminal past was about to make one last, desperate strike.
On a warm May afternoon while Harlan was away at a legal summit in Lansing, a convoy of unmarked delivery trucks pulled up to the estate's rear gate.
Before the security team could verify the security clearance, heavy explosives detonated at the perimeter wall, blowing the iron gates completely off their hinges.
Screams echoed across the compound as armed mercenaries rushed into the courtyard.
Inside the nursery, I grabbed Belle, pulling her behind the heavy reinforced steel door of the panic room located inside Harlan’s master study.
"Rue! What's happening?!" Belle cried, clinging to my dress.
"Stay here, baby," I whispered, locking the heavy digital lock from the inside. "Do not open this door for anyone except your father or me."
"Rue, no!" she sobbed.
I pulled out the satellite phone Harlan had given me, pressed the panic button, and looked at the security monitors inside the room.
The mercenaries were led by a man named Victor Vance—the rogue former head of security who had kidnapped Belle six months ago. He had survived Harlan's initial purge and had gathered remaining regional elements for a final, suicidal raid on the estate.
He was heading straight for the study, holding a heavy breaching charge.
If he set off that charge against the panic room door, the pressure blast inside the small space could rupture Belle’s weak heart valves.
I couldn't let him detonate it.
I grabbed a heavy steel fireplace poker from the hearth, unlocked the panic room door, stepped out into the study, and slammed the heavy door shut behind me, locking Belle safely inside.
Five seconds later, Victor Vance kicked open the study doors.
He was covered in tactical gear, his face scarred and bloody, holding a shotgun and a breaching charge. He stopped when he saw me standing alone in the center of the mahogany room, holding a fireplace poker, my eyes blazing with pure, unyielding rage.
"Where is the girl?!" Vance barked, raising his weapon.
"She’s somewhere you’ll never reach, Vance," I said, my voice steady and cold. "You touched her once in that garage. You will never lay a hand on her again."
Vance sneered, taking a step toward me. "You stupid little waitress. You think you can stop me?"
He lunged forward to grab me. I swung the steel poker with all the strength in my body, striking him hard across the side of his helmet, sending him stumbling back against the mahogany bookcase.
Vance roared in anger, recovering quickly, knocking the poker from my hand, and slamming me hard against the glass display case. Pain shot through my shoulder, but I didn't back down. I reached for a heavy bronze statue on the desk, smashing it across his face.
Vance staggered, bleeding from his nose, his eyes wild with rage. He raised his shotgun, aiming it directly at my chest.
"Die, bitch," he growled.
BANG!
A deafening gunshot shattered the room.
Vance’s eyes went wide. He froze, dropped his weapon, and collapsed face-first onto the Persian rug.
Standing in the shattered doorway of the study, holding a smoking pistol, was Harlan Voss.
Behind him, fifty tactical guards had swept the compound clear, neutralizing every last mercenary.
Harlan dropped his gun, rushing across the room, scooping me into his arms with a desperate, terrifying strength. He held me so tight I could barely breathe, his body trembling violently.
"Rue... Rue... my God, Rue..." he choked out, pressing wild, desperate kisses all over my face, my neck, my hair. "Are you hit? Tell me you're okay! Speak to me!"
May you like
"I’m okay," I gasped, holding onto his suit jacket, tears finally streaming down my face. "I’m okay, Harlan... Belle is safe in the panic room."
Harlan pulled back, looking at my face, at the bruised shoulder, and at the absolute courage glowing in my eyes. He bowed his head against my shoulder, sobbing silently—a man who had conquered a city, weeping out of pure, overwhelming gratitude for the woman who had protected his world.
