Chapter 4 - The Web of Collusion

The silence that followed Liv’s confession was different from the silence before. It was heavy, suffocating, and dirty.
My mother sat back on her heels on the hardwood floor, looking bewildered. "David? David Vance? Mark's business partner?"
I stared at Liv, then slowly turned my eyes toward Mark, who was leaning against the hallway wall with his head tilted back toward the ceiling, his eyes closed. He looked exhausted, but underlying it was a sickening sense of relief that the truth was finally out—or at least, this version of the truth.
"David," I repeated, digesting the name. "David is married to Sarah. Sarah, who sat at my hospital bed after my second miscarriage and held my hand for twelve hours."
"It... it was a mistake," Liv wept, sitting on the floor, wiping her nose with her sleeve. "It happened twice. In June, and then... then in Phoenix."
"Phoenix," I said. The pieces began clicking into place with horrifying speed. "The business trip on July 9th."
"David was going to Phoenix for the Vantage meeting," Mark interjected, his voice flat, devoid of emotion now that his own neck was off the chopping block. "Liv went with him. They stayed at the Westin."
"And you knew?" I asked Mark, taking a step toward him. "You knew your business partner was cheating on my best friend with my sister?"
"I found out in July," Mark said defensively, holding his hands up. "David told me after they got back. He was freaking out. He said it was over, that it was a huge mistake. I tried to stay out of it, Hannah!"
"You tried to stay out of it?" I laughed—a sharp, cutting sound that made my mother wince. "You used our joint credit card to pay for their pharmacy charges in Scottsdale! I saw the statement, Mark!"
"David forgot his corporate card!" Mark snapped back, his temper flaring again. "He panicked! He asked me to cover the hotel room and the incidentals so his wife wouldn't see the charges on their family account! He paid me back in cash!"
"So you acted as an accomplice," I said. "You helped my sister and your business partner cover up an affair that resulted in a pregnancy. You lied to me for months. You let me sit at home taking hormone injections alone while you were facilitating their rendezvous!"
"I was trapped in the middle!" Mark yelled. "If I exposed David, our firm would collapse! Vanguard Real Estate is built on David’s clients! If Sarah finds out and divorces him, she takes fifty percent of his equity, and our business goes under! Do you have any idea what kind of financial pressure I was under?!"
"So my dignity, my friendship with Sarah, and my trust in you were just collateral damage to save your firm?"
Mark didn't answer. He couldn't. His silence was an admission of total moral bankruptcy.
Mom stood up, brushing off her skirt. She looked flustered, her face pale, but her instinct to minimize and protect the family dynamic immediately kicked in. "Well... Hannah... at least Mark didn't sleep with her. Thank God for that. It's awful, yes, terrible about David and Sarah, but... but Mark was just trying to protect his business and your sister—"
"Mom, shut your mouth," I said without looking at her.
"Hannah!" Mom gasped.
"You need to leave," I told my mother and Liv. "Both of you. Get out of my house."
"Hannah, please," Liv begged, pulling herself up using the banister. "I didn't mean for any of this to happen. David said he was going to leave Sarah, but then when I found out I was pregnant, he panicked and told me to get rid of it. I called Mark because I didn't have anyone else..."
"You had a sister," I said, my voice dropping to a whisper that cut deeper than any scream. "You had a sister who was drowning in infertility, who would have given anything to have a child, and you brought this toxic, disgusting mess into my home on the day my last embryo died."
May you like
I walked over to the front door, pulled it wide open, and stood waiting.
"Out."
