Chapter 6 — The Truth That Breaks the Trap

It was Frank who found the final piece.

A voice recording.

Recovered from an old departmental server backup.

Beatrice’s statement before suspension.

Grace played it in the kitchen while everyone stood frozen.

A young woman’s voice filled the room:

“I didn’t sign off on the final revision. Caleb did. He told me the data had been corrected, but it hadn’t.”

A pause.

“And Katherine… she warned me not to challenge it. She said it would ‘damage the department’s reputation.’”

Silence.

Grace looked up slowly.

“That’s not what she told us,” she whispered.

Frank frowned.

“She said she didn’t know anything.”

Caleb stepped back.

“No,” he said quietly. “That’s not possible.”

But the recording continued:

“They both let it happen. And now they’re rewriting it so only I carry the blame.”

Silence fell.

The truth had finally entered the room.

Not clean.

Not simple.

But undeniable.

Katherine stood frozen.

Then whispered:

“I didn’t say that.”

Grace turned to her.

Katherine’s eyes filled with panic.

“I swear I didn’t say that,” she repeated.

And in that moment, Grace understood something terrifying.

Someone had built this entire story…

before the wedding ever happened.

Final Note (End of Chapter 6 Setup)

Caleb had not just brought home a wife.

He had brought home a courtroom he had been preparing for years.

And Katherine—

May you like

was not the guilty party.

But she was also not outside the story anymore.
