Chapter 1 - The Video in the Dark

The digital timestamp at the bottom right corner of the video readout burned bright against the dim glow of Christopher’s office desk: Seven days before the wedding. 11:42 PM.

In the video, the room was instantly recognizable. It was the private back lounge of the bridal boutique downtown—the very room where Ashley had helped me zip up my ivory silk gown, adjusting my veil with tears in her eyes, calling me her sister, her best friend since high school.

On the screen, Ashley wasn't crying.

She was sitting on Dwight’s lap, her arms wrapped tightly around his neck, her manicured fingers running through his hair. Dwight’s arms were pulled tight around her waist, kissing her with a desperate, hungry intensity that he had never once shown me in the three years we had been together.

My lungs seized. The air in the office felt like cold lead.

On the screen, Ashley pulled back slightly, breathy, laughing softly. "Dwight... stop. What if Elizabeth walks back in? She’s just changing out of the fitting dress."

Dwight laughed—a low, dismissive chuckle that sent a wave of nausea straight to my stomach. "Elizabeth is busy arguing with the seamstress over fifty dollars. She won't come back out here for twenty minutes."

"Are you really going through with this?" Ashley asked, her eyes narrowing as she traced the line of his jaw. "The wedding is next week, Dwight. You’re actually going to stand at that altar and look at her?"

"I'm looking at her forty-eight thousand dollars, Ash," Dwight said smoothly, leaning in to kiss her collarbone. "My dad’s credit lines are maxed out. The family apartment in Baltimore is two months away from foreclosure. My sister Gemma owes fifteen grand to a private lender, and Ryan’s college tuition is overdue. My father told me straight up: if I don't secure Elizabeth’s signature on that joint down-payment account before the end of the month, we lose everything."

Ashley stroked his hair, her voice sweet as honey, laced with pure venom. "And what about after the wedding? How long do I have to watch you play happy husband?"

"Six months," Dwight declared without a second of hesitation. "That’s all my dad needs to transfer her forty-eight grand into our family’s corporate account. Once the money is integrated into the property holding, my mother and Gemma will make her life a living hell. We’ll force her to break. We’ll push her until she walks out on her own, signs a quick quitclaim deed just to escape my family, and leaves the money behind. By this time next year, Elizabeth will be broke, divorced, and out of the picture, and you and I will have the apartment down payment in cash."

Ashley kissed him again—a hard, triumphant kiss. "You better not fall back in love with her, Dwight."

"Love her?" Dwight snickered into her neck. "I never loved her, Ash. She was just a quiet girl with a fat inheritance and no family in Baltimore to back her up."

The video file ended.

The screen flickered black, reflecting my own face back at me in the dark office. My eyes were wide, my jaw tight, my bruised lip throbbing with a sharp, rhythmic pulse.

Beside me, my friend Amy let out a sharp, horrified gasp, covering her mouth with both hands. "Oh my god... Elizabeth... oh my god."

Christopher, sitting behind his desk, didn't gasp. He reached over, calmly inserted a high-capacity encrypted flash drive into the laptop, and copied the entire "X" folder, along with the system metadata logs, timestamp certificates, and cloud synchronization history.

"This isn't just evidence for a divorce proceeding, Elizabeth," Christopher said, his voice dropping into a deep, chillingly quiet register. "This is evidence of pre-meditated grand larceny, conspiracy to commit financial fraud, and systematic domestic abuse."

"They took everything I had," I whispered, my voice raspy, trembling as I touched the swollen, discolored bruise on my cheekbone. "My father left me that forty-eight thousand dollars when he died three years ago. It was supposed to build my future."

"And it will build your future," Christopher corrected, pulling the flash drive from the port and sliding it into his pocket. "Because tomorrow morning, we aren't just filing for divorce. We are filing an emergency ex-parte freezing order on all accounts associated with Dwight, Jared, and Susan. And then we are turning this video over to the State’s Attorney."

He looked at me, his sharp eyes holding mine in the quiet office light.

"They picked a fight with a woman they thought was alone in this city," Christopher said softly. "Let's show them what happens when that woman fights back."
