Chapter 2 — The Chef Who Was Never Meant to Survive That Night

Naomi woke up in a room she didn’t recognize.

White ceiling. Soft lighting. The smell of antiseptic trying—and failing—to hide something richer underneath: ginger, sesame oil, and broth.

Her body hurt in places she hadn’t yet identified.

But the worst part wasn’t the pain.

It was the silence.

No shouting.

No marble floor.

No Vivian Park standing over her like judgment.

Just quiet.

Too clean.

She tried to sit up.

A voice immediately stopped her.

“Don’t.”

Calm. Low. Controlled.

Naomi turned her head.

The man from the mansion was there.

Jae-min Kang.

Standing near the window like he had never left it.

She swallowed. Her throat burned.

“Am I… in a hospital?” she asked.

“No,” he said.

A pause.

“My facility.”

That didn’t help.

“Am I detained?” she whispered.

His eyes moved to her face for the first time since she woke.

“No.”

A beat.

“Protected.”

That word made her laugh once—weak, broken.

“Protected by who?”

Jae-min didn’t answer immediately.

Then:

“By the consequences of what happened to you.”

That was not reassuring.

That was a warning.

The Truth Begins to Leak

Somewhere across Los Angeles, Vivian Park was trying to control the narrative.

It wasn’t going well.

First, the guests.

Then the staff.

Then the video.

Not the full video—just fragments.

Enough.

A woman screaming.

A bowl of boiling stew.

A man in a black suit walking down stairs like gravity didn’t apply to him.

By midnight, three people had already sent it to someone important.

By 1:12 AM, it had reached Koreatown.

By 1:47 AM, it had reached the wrong inbox.

And by 2:03 AM—

Jae-min Kang had stopped eating dinner.

Not because he was hungry.

Because he had stopped recognizing restraint as necessary.

Naomi Learns Who He Is

Back in the room, Naomi watched him carefully.

“You’re not a chef,” she said quietly.

“No,” he replied.

“You’re not security either.”

A pause.

“No.”

That left only one option.

Her stomach tightened.

“You own her.”

That made him look at her more directly.

“No,” he said again.

A slight pause.

“She is not owned.”

Naomi frowned. “Then what are you?”

He considered that.

Then answered:

“The person she reports to when she is safe.”

That sentence didn’t clarify anything.

It made everything heavier.

Meanwhile — Vivian’s First Collapse

Vivian Park stood in her mansion kitchen.

The marble floor had already been scrubbed.

The guests had already been called.

The PR team had already been activated.

But something was wrong.

Not externally.

Internally.

Her husband wasn’t speaking.

Her staff avoided eye contact.

And every phone call she made ended the same way:

Silence… then refusal.

At 2:26 AM, her financial advisor finally answered.

He sounded exhausted.

“Vivian… you need to stop calling me.”

She blinked. “Excuse me?”

“There are instructions from above.”

“Above what?”

A pause.

Then:

“Above you.”

The line went dead.

Vivian stared at her phone.

For the first time that night—

fear started to replace anger.

Jae-min Moves

At 3:00 AM, Jae-min left the room where Naomi was resting.

She noticed immediately.

“Where are you going?” she asked.

He paused at the door.

“To finish something.”

“That’s not an answer.”

He nodded slightly.

“I know.”

Then:

“But it is the only one that matters right now.”

And he left.

The First Strike

By sunrise, Vivian Park’s private accounts were frozen.

Not just personal funds.

Her shell companies.

Her offshore holdings.

Her foundation access.

Gone.

Simultaneously.

Cleanly.

As if someone had removed her from the financial system itself.

Raymond woke up to six lawyers calling him at once.

None of them sounded confident anymore.

One simply said:

“You are no longer protected.”

That was the first time Vivian understood something terrifying:

This wasn’t a scandal.

It was an erasure.

Naomi Meets the Real World

Morning light finally reached Naomi’s room.

Jae-min returned.

This time, he brought something with him.

A file.

He placed it on the table beside her bed.

“What is that?” she asked.

“Your next decision point,” he said.

She frowned. “I don’t understand anything that’s happening.”

He nodded.

“That is normal.”

A pause.

Then he added:

“You were attacked in a private residence owned by a woman who believes influence replaces accountability.”

Naomi swallowed. “And you?”

“I believe in consequences.”

She stared at him.

“You’re dangerous.”

He didn’t deny it.

“Yes.”

That honesty unsettled her more than denial would have.

She looked at the file.

“What happens to her?” Naomi asked quietly.

Jae-min didn’t answer immediately.

Then:

“That depends on whether you choose to speak publicly.”

Naomi blinked. “Me?”

“Yes.”

A pause.

“You are no longer invisible.”

That sentence hit harder than the pain in her face.

The Choice Begins

Naomi looked down at her hands.

They were still shaking slightly.

“I don’t want revenge,” she whispered.

Jae-min watched her carefully.

“I didn’t ask you to want it.”

A pause.

“I asked you to decide whether you want silence or truth.”

Outside, somewhere far away, Vivian Park was realizing she could no longer buy her way back into stability.

Inside the room, Naomi realized something else:

She had never been just a chef.

Not anymore.

May you like

And the moment she spoke—

someone’s world would end.
